Director of Retail & Spa

Mountain Lake | Full-Time | Salaried/Exempt | Executive Committee

Mountain Lake is seeking an experienced, creative, and business-minded Director of Retail & Spa to lead our retail and spa operations while driving exceptional guest experiences, revenue growth, and profitability.

Reporting directly to the General Manager and serving as a member of the Executive Committee, this position oversees The Spa at Mountain Lake, Mary’s Market, Outfitters, and seasonal/pop-up retail operations.

This is more than an operational management position. We are looking for a leader who understands how to turn great guest experiences into successful businesses through strong merchandising, strategic pricing, inventory management, spa utilization, product development, sales strategies, and new revenue opportunities.

The Director of Retail & Spa is expected to bring this Promise to life while building Retail and Spa into increasingly important contributors to the Mountain Lake guest experience and overall financial performance.

What You’ll Lead

The Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for all Retail and Spa operations with responsibility for:

· Delivering an exceptional and memorable guest experience.

· Driving measurable year-over-year revenue growth.

· Developing and executing retail merchandising and seasonal buying strategies.

· Managing inventory levels, turnover, shrinkage, sell-through, aged inventory, and product availability.

· Establishing pricing strategies that balance guest value, competitive positioning, cost, margin, and profitability.

· Managing purchasing, receiving, vendor relationships, and inventory controls.

· Creating compelling visual merchandising and retail presentations.

· Developing exclusive Mountain Lake-branded merchandise and unique products connected to the resort, Appalachian setting, outdoor experiences, and Mountain Lake story.

· Growing Spa revenue through increased utilization, guest capture, packages, enhancements, retail sales, gift programs, and new experiences.

· Developing seasonal, event, group, wedding, holiday, and pop-up retail opportunities.

· Identifying pre-arrival, in-stay, post-stay, e-commerce, gift card, day-guest, and local-market revenue opportunities.

· Preparing and managing departmental budgets, forecasts, labor, cost of goods sold, margins, and operating expenses.

· Recruiting, training, coaching, and developing Retail and Spa associates, supervisors, managers, and service providers.

· Collaborating with Sales, Events, Marketing, Reservations, Front Office, Food & Beverage, Recreation, Facilities, Finance & HR, and the Mountain Lake Conservancy.

Revenue Growth Matters

A major expectation of this position is to grow the business.

The Director will be expected to understand and actively manage key performance indicators including:

· Retail and Spa revenue

· Year-over-year revenue growth

· Revenue versus budget and forecast

· Gross profit and gross margin

· Cost of goods sold

· Average retail transaction

· Retail conversion and sales productivity

· Inventory turnover and sell-through

· Inventory accuracy and shrinkage

· Spa capture and treatment-room utilization

· Average spa treatment revenue

· Spa retail attachment

· Gift card and certificate sales

· Labor productivity

· Performance of new revenue initiatives

We are looking for a Director who regularly asks:

What are we not selling today that our guests would value?

What experience can we create that guests would gladly purchase?

How can we improve revenue while also improving the guest experience?

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

· Five or more years of progressive hospitality, resort, retail, spa, or related management experience preferred.

· Department-head, director, multi-unit, or multi-revenue-center leadership experience preferred.

· Demonstrated success in revenue growth and business development.

· Strong experience with retail merchandising, purchasing, inventory controls, pricing, and margin management.

· Experience with budgeting, forecasting, labor management, and financial reporting.

· Strong understanding of guest service and hospitality.

· Ability to interpret sales, inventory, labor, margin, and profitability data and turn that information into action.

· Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Experience developing and coaching teams.

· Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Business, Retail Management, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

Who Will Succeed in This Role?

The successful Director will be highly visible, hands-on, commercially minded, creative, and passionate about hospitality.

You should know what guests are experiencing, what merchandise is selling, what is not selling, what inventory is sitting on the shelf, where margins are being lost, what Spa capacity remains available, what associates need to succeed, and where the next revenue opportunity exists.

Maintaining the status quo is not the objective.

The objective is to create a better guest experience while growing Retail and Spa into stronger, more profitable businesses for Mountain Lake.

This is a full-time, salaried/exempt leadership position. Because Mountain Lake is a resort operation, the position requires schedule flexibility, including weekends, holidays, evenings, high-occupancy periods, major events, and other periods based on business needs.
