QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One of the following:
- Associate's Degree or higher; or
- Completion of at least two years (48 semester credits) of college coursework; or
- Successful completion of an approved paraprofessional assessment, if required.
- Previous experience working with children, preferably in a school or special education setting.
- Knowledge of child development and the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities.
- Ability to support students with academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and functional needs.
- Ability to implement instructional strategies, accommodations, modifications, and behavior supports under the supervision of certified staff.
- Basic knowledge of educational technology, Google Workspace, student information systems, and other district software.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, families, and staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and district policy.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities, work independently, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and assist students with mobility and personal care as needed.

Special Education Teacher, Classroom Teacher, and Director of Student Services or designee.
JOB SUMMARY
The Special Education Paraprofessional assists the Special Education Teacher and classroom teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by providing instructional, behavioral, social-emotional, and personal support to students with disabilities. The paraprofessional works collaboratively with school staff to promote student independence, inclusion, and success while maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Special Education Paraprofessional performs duties that support students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, and functional development. Responsibilities include instructional support, behavior support, progress monitoring, classroom assistance, personal care, collaboration with staff and families, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and district requirements.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Instructional Support
- Reinforce concepts and skills previously taught by the teacher.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction under the supervision of certified staff.
- Support students in completing classroom assignments and accessing instructional materials.
- Implement accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies identified in students' IEPs.
- Assist with classroom assessments and instructional activities as directed.
- Encourage students to become independent learners while maintaining high academic expectations.
- Support student participation in general education and special education settings.
B. Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
- Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
- Reinforce school-wide behavioral expectations.
- Model respectful communication and appropriate social interactions.
- Support students in developing self-regulation, emotional awareness, and positive peer relationships.
- Utilize approved de-escalation strategies while maintaining student dignity.
- Promote student independence by providing the least intrusive level of support appropriate to each student's needs.
- Document behavioral observations and communicate concerns to supervising staff.
C. Progress Monitoring and Data Collection
- Collect academic, behavioral, functional, and IEP progress-monitoring data as directed.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
- Monitor student engagement and participation.
- Share observations and progress with supervising teachers.
D. Classroom Support
- Prepare instructional materials and organize classroom resources.
- Operate and maintain classroom equipment.
- Support classroom routines, transitions, and organization.
- Encourage language development through meaningful conversation.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, lunch, recess, assemblies, emergency drills, field trips, arrival, and dismissal as assigned.
- Assist substitute teachers by providing information regarding classroom routines when appropriate.
E. Student Health and Personal Care
- Assist students with toileting, feeding, hygiene, mobility, positioning, and other personal care needs as trained.
- Assist with student transportation when appropriate.
- Follow district procedures regarding student health, safety, and medical support.
- Maintain student dignity and privacy during personal care activities.
F. Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special education staff, related service providers, administrators, and families.
- Attend IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development as assigned.
- Maintain professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Communicate student progress and concerns to supervising staff.
- Demonstrate flexibility in supporting students across educational settings.
- Seek guidance whenever questions or emergencies arise.
G. Compliance and Confidentiality
- Maintain strict confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and district policy.
- Become familiar with applicable special education laws, district procedures, and Board policies.
- Maintain required documentation and records.
- Report suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with Idaho law and district policy.
- Complete assigned clerical responsibilities accurately and promptly.

The employee may regularly:
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb stairs.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40 pounds.
- Assist students with mobility and transfers when appropriately trained.
- Respond appropriately to student behavioral or safety situations.
- Work indoors and outdoors under varying environmental conditions.

EVALUATION
Performance shall be evaluated annually by the Director of Student Services or designee in accordance with district policy, applicable federal and state law, and Board policy.
