Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Chaplain is responsible for assisting the Director of Pastoral Care in providing pastoral care throughout the medical center/healthcare system.

Responds to all calls from the hospital during assigned shifts (verbal response within 10 minutes of page; physical response within 30 minutes); provides spiritual support, crisis intervention, and religious rituals judiciously, based on professional assessment and patient/family need. Offers appropriate support to staff and volunteers as well as patients and families. Documents assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record according to policies and protocols. Shows respect and sensitivity toward people of all faith traditions and no faith tradition; advocates for those of minority belief systems. Refers to and requests support from peers, supervisor, or clinical nursing colleagues in cases where situations are overwhelming and to provide continuity of care through shift changes.

Integrates knowledge and skills with effective interactions to provide quality work. Provides direct and indirect ways to communicate with those who need it, meeting the needs of each encounter, in-line with their scope. Decisions and actions are determined in an ethical manner practicing compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of each person. Effectively communicates with patients/families, visitors, colleagues, physicians, leadership, and volunteers. All areas of work are provided to achieve and maintain top-decile results and outcomes for patient experience, quality, and patient safety.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation starts at $22.86 per hour.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education

A Master’s Degree in Divinity or related field is preferred. At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education and Ordination preferred.

Experience

- At least one (1) year of experience providing pastoral services in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Required Registration/License/Certification

Board Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains is preferred, though not required. If a BCC, employee is expected to maintain certification annually.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Understanding of the role of chaplain in a healthcare facility. Sensitivity to and respect for all religions and faith groups.
Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Capacity to deal calmly with stressful situations.
Ability to offer compassionate, non-judgmental presence with people across racial, ethnic, faith, class, and lifestyle spectrums.

Physical Demands

Manual dexterity and mobility.
Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting and, at times, standing/walking.
Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less..

Working Conditions

Exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment, odorous chemicals, and specimens and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
Episodes of walking/standing greater than > 7 hours per shift.
Speaking, reading, and writing > 8 hours per day.
Infrequently: lift, carry, push, and/or pull > 30 lbs.
Frequently per shift: bends, squats, kneels, twists, turns, and reaches.
Frequently per minute: hand, finger, and wrist repetition and moderate dexterity.
Frequently per hour: exposed to soft voices > 3 feet away.
Frequently per hour: exposed to close eye work.
