ABOUT THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT:

The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. CDD’s mission is to foster a livable, sustainable, just, and equitable community. CDD has three programmatic divisions – Economic Opportunity & Development, Community Planning & Design, and Zoning & Development – and also encompasses the Housing Department and the Arts Council. Together, we engage and collaborate with community partners, government agencies, businesses and residents to make Cambridge a desirable place to live, work, learn, play, and innovate.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Under the direction of the Manager for Budget & Finance and the Assistant Fiscal Manager, the Fiscal Intern will assist in processing fiscal transactions, tracking activity, and general report preparation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with fiscal staff to complete transactions such as accounts payable review and processing
Monitor fiscal transactions to determine status and update tracking system
May assist in the development of various internal budget/expenditure reports and reconciliations
Review information provided in PeopleSoft Financials for use in preparing various financial reports.
Accurately perform assigned duties in a timely manner
May perform additional projects as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience

College level coursework in business, finance or accounting or equivalent work experience
Previous experience working in an office environment
Public sector experience a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding of practical accounting principles
Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials a plus
Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner
Highly motivated and detail oriented
Ability to prioritize workloads, multitask and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office environment with fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, computers and other standard office equipment. Shared workstation with a moderate noise level. This position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy, depending on operational needs.

Duration: This position is intended to be ongoing, and it is not limited to an academic year or term. A minimum commitment through June 2027 is anticipated, with an option to extend further if mutually agreeable.

COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY

The City of Cambridge is committed to providing fair, transparent, and competitive compensation to all employees. The salary range listed in this job posting reflects the full range for this position's pay grade (Steps 1–10). New employees joining the organization are hired within the hiring range, Steps 1 through 5, with placement at the midpoint reserved for the most qualified candidates. Starting placement is based on directly related education and experience relative to the minimum qualifications of the position, required licenses or certifications, internal equity with current employees, and relevant labor market factors. Employees progress through the 10 steps over time through the City's established step and pay progression policies.

This compensation philosophy applies to non‑union positions. For union positions, please refer to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Current City employees applying to another position should refer to the Compensation & Classification Manual for the policies governing promotions, lateral transfers, and other internal salary changes.
