-The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking candidates for the position of Veterinary Assistant. HSBV’s veterinary hospital is full-service, and open to the public. As a member of the veterinary team, the Veterinary Assistant helps ensure exceptional patient care and client support during veterinary appointments, and during treatments. The assistant provides operational support by preparing exam rooms, prepping equipment and instruments, filling prescriptions, preparing laboratory samples, and assists with restraining animals for treatment. The assistant takes an active role in educating clients about proper animal care and also promotes HSBV services and programs.
This position is hourly, non-exempt, and scheduled for 30-40 hours per week. Weekend availability is required to be considered for the role. A pre-employment background check and drug screen are required for all employment candidates.

Summary of Responsibilities; may include but are not limited to:

Assist Veterinarian in the examination and treatment of animals.

Record initial presenting complaint, patient history and patient vitals. Draft thorough and appropriate notes within the patient medical record.

Prepare medications, vaccinations, and treatments for patients in exam rooms.

Maintain exam rooms including necessary equipment and supplies. Clean, prepare and sterilize exam room equipment and instruments.

Fill prescriptions with veterinarian approval and assist with pharmacy inventory as assigned.

Assist with animal restraint and sample collection (blood draw, urine collection).

Report any patient health or temperament abnormalities to veterinarian or veterinary technician.

Educate clients on post-exam treatment and care for their animals.

Prepare laboratory samples for submission. Perform in-house laboratory testing including fecal analysis, urinalysis and blood-chemistry screenings.

May assist or perform euthanasia of animals.

Maintain veterinary equipment in good, working condition.

Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, work areas and work surfaces daily.

Feed, water and care for hospitalized animals as assigned.

Perform check-in and client discharge of hospitalized patients.

Perform other duties as assigned by the veterinarian or manager.

The anticipated pay range for this position starts at $19.00 per hour. This pay rates is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this potion and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills. Qualifications
Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) or similar preferred but not required. Experience working in animal health or animal welfare preferred. A minimum of one year of experience working with the public or in customer service. Experience working as or with volunteers preferred. Spanish/English speaking individuals encouraged to apply. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills and customer service skills. Shows initiative and is a conscientious worker. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once in a fast-paced environment. Detail oriented and exercises good judgment when dealing with the public and animal-related concerns. Work Environment
Work is performed in a kennel/shelter/clinic setting. Exposure to disinfectant solutions and high noise level when in kennel and clinic areas. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animal of questionable temperament. Daily lifting of up to 50 pounds. Ten-hour work shift requires standing, walking, bending, twisting, lifting, kneeling, squatting and sitting while restraining animals for treatment, assisting veterinarians in surgery or in exam rooms, communicating with clients, performing data entry, and general housekeeping of the work environment.
