In partnership with the Bus Driver, the Bus Assistant is responsible for providing safe, reliable transportation of students by following all transportation policies and safety procedures, maintaining a positive environment on the bus, and assisting with student behavior management. The Bus Assistant provides specialized support for students with disabilities, responds to emergencies, and uses appropriate equipment and communication tools. The role collaborates with drivers, dispatch, and supervisors on route safety and evacuation planning, completes required inspections and documentation, and maintains professional communication and punctuality to ensure consistent, student-centered transportation services.

Understand, follow, and enforce all policies and procedures related to school bus operation, student behavior, and safety; complete required paperwork for relevant departments and agencies; and respond to emergencies using appropriate first aid, body fluid clean-up, and evacuation procedures.

Provide support for students with disabilities, including, but not limited to, the proper use of transportation equipment, attending to hygienic needs and behavioral challenges, monitoring medical conditions, and utilizing specialized communication tools. Assisting may include moving around the bus while it is in motion.

Monitor and manage student behavior, ensuring the safe transportation of students by accounting for all riders after each route or trip, managing student behavior using established strategies, and monitoring for signs of child abuse, harassment, bullying, or medical concerns.

Maintain professional communication and demeanor with staff, parents, students, and community members and ensure a safe and collaborative environment on the bus.

Support the development of bus evacuation plans and student management strategies, and provide dispatch, routing, and supervisors with input on route accuracy, safety concerns, stop locations, timing, and student information.

Perform detailed inspections of mechanical equipment on assigned vehicles in accordance with policies and procedures.

Report to the assigned terminal at required times and maintain assigned scheduled times with an emphasis on safety.

Successfully complete all required courses, evaluations, and meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Must be 18 years of age or older

Complete and submitted BVSD online application

Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English
Must pass pre-employment/post-offer physical e- amination upon hire

Must pass transportation equipment evaluation; must acquire within 30 days of hire

Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification; must acquire within 60 days of hire

Child Safety Restraint Systems for School Buses; must acquire within 30 days of hire

Proficient in PC Operations

Must maintain all required certifications throughout employment
Preferred:
Up to and including one year e
- perience in School Bus Transportation
E- perience working with children ages 0-21 years

Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with passengers, parents, and school staff
