POSITION SUMMARY
The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging plans, directs, and supervises all technical aspects of the Diagnostic Imaging Services. Recommends and suggestions to the radiologists, possible equipment modifications, assists in new equipment purchases and essential construction within these departments. Assists in planning the budgets and the development of department policies and procedures. Coordinates departmental purchasing and is responsible for stock levels, storage, and utilization of the same. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital’s customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging directs all departmental activity to ensure a coordinated effort to fulfill departmental responsibilities within the long-range plan of the hospital. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging directs and supervises the operations of the Department to ensure the quality of services.
2. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging assigns daily staffing for all areas in order to accommodate patient needs in a timely manner.
3. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging maintains accurate patient records, documents, and billing information.
4. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging performs basic patient care duties within the department.
5. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging assists the Director of Radiology with programs and plans for the department.
6. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging assists in maintaining established Technical Radiologic safety standards. May act as R.S.O. if approved by the Texas Department of Health-BRC.
7. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging accepts responsibility for maintaining licenses and improving staff competency.
8. The Supervisor of Diagnostic Imaging demonstrates knowledge and skill in meeting
age-related needs for the neonate, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and mentally ill and handicapped patients.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education: A.R.R.T. (M.R.T.) with 3 years of supervisory and multi-modality experience. A.S.R.T. degree preferred.
Work Environment: Work environment which has temperature variances which can vary with the needs of the patient and/or equipment. Lighting may range from dark to bright. Sounds can range from the whisper of a patient to raised voices delivering instructions, to the constant electrical background noise of radiographic equipment. Work may involve radiation and other hazardous materials. SDS available.
Physical Abilities: Will be scheduled to work shifts ranging from 4 to 16 hours. The following is based on an average 8-hour shift. Sitting - less than 2 hours per shift. Standing/Walking - up to balance shift. Will be required to bend/stoop, squat, climb and kneel during shift duties. May be required by patient procedures and assigned duties to reach above shoulder level. Carrying of procedures-related supplies and cassettes. Pushing/pulling of equipment and patients will be required. Must be able to lift 40 pounds. Required to assist in lifting of patients, supplies and equipment. Accurate vision with ability to adapt from light to dark rapidly. Hearing capability ranging from understanding a whispered command to withstanding loud equipment noises.
Age Related Specific Skills:
Neonate/Infant: The technologist can adjust the machinery to extremely short exposures to generate radiographs with sharpness and virtually arrest motion. Immobilization of the infant is the most important part of any radiologic examination. Adequate immobilization provides optimal results for rapid and efficient exams and, in the long run, less radiation exposure to the infant. Whenever possible, infants should be protected by a gonadal shield and collimation of the X-ray beam. Should be such that only the desired portion of the body is included in the direct beam.
Toddler (Age 1 to 3, Preschool Age 3 to 5, School Age 5 to 12): Safety is the key issue addressed with this age group. An attendant must always be with the child. This will decrease the risk of trauma related to increased mobility and curiosity. Appropriate immobilization in combination with extremely short exposure times to stop motion will be utilized. Extra time should be spent with the child and guardian to familiarize the child with the technologist and new surrounding to gain additional cooperation for the radiologic exam.
Adolescents (12 to 18): By this age, 30 to 50 percent of adult weight is achieved. Most of this group need a little extra time with instruction, with the most able to cooperate fully. Extra measures should be taken to protect the reproductive system with gonadal shielding. Adult techniques should be applied by photo-timing or measurement of the anatomy to be radiographed.
Adult (18 and Up): This age can diversify and cooperate fully with the technologist the patient can verbalize and exercise their rights to have an examination ordered by their attending physician. Standard radiologic protocols will be used for this age group.
Geriatric: This portion of the adult group might have a difficult time hearing or understanding direction, therefore have more difficult time cooperating for examinations. Additional time should be allotted for instruction. This age group may also be more difficult to position due to a lack of muscle tissue, osteoporosis, or kyphosis. There is a need for the technologist to spend additional time with the patient, apply techniques with lower KVP to prevent over penetration of the bone due to the loss of calcium, and use special angles for positioning due to the decreased immobility of joints.
