Research Project Manager

VA Boston Healthcare System

This position is based within VA Boston Healthcare System, a leading healthcare system in New England that serves as a premier referral center and a major recipient of research funding. The informatics group is dedicated to leveraging data science and clinical data to conduct high-impact research aimed at expanding our understanding of human health and improving healthcare outcomes.

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Project Manager with research experience to support a portfolio of healthcare research initiatives from planning through execution. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, enjoys coordinating multiple priorities, and has strong communication and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to manage projects independently while fostering effective collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. A passion for improving healthcare through research and the thoughtful use of data, combined with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, will be key to success in this position.

Joining our team offers the opportunity to work with one of the largest integrated electronic medical record databases in the United States, containing comprehensive clinical information on more than 22 million patients. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of clinicians, statisticians, engineers, and data scientists on innovative research that addresses important healthcare questions. Through this work, you will contribute to high-impact studies that inform clinical practice, healthcare policy, and patient outcomes while helping advance the use of cutting-edge analytical methods in real-world healthcare research.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Coordinate priorities across multiple concurrent research projects, ensuring project milestones, deliverables, and timelines are achieved.
Adapt to evolving project needs while maintaining a structured, organized approach to project execution and advancement.
Identify project risks, issues, or items that require supervisor awareness and facilitate their timely resolution.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including clinicians, statisticians, data scientists, engineers, and other subject matter experts—to support the planning and execution of research projects.
Organize and facilitate internal and external meetings, including scheduling, preparing agendas, documenting key decisions and action items, and distributing meeting summaries.
Maintain clear and timely communication with project teams and stakeholders by providing project updates, tracking action items, and ensuring requests are addressed promptly.
Prepare reports, presentations, and other project materials to communicate progress, findings, and recommendations to research collaborators, healthcare partners, and other stakeholders.
Support the preparation of scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and other research products as appropriate.
Support research administration by maintaining project documentation, organizing study materials, tracking project activities, and ensuring timely completion of project deliverables.
Assist with research data coordination, including monitoring data collection activities, maintaining project tracking systems, and supporting data quality and completeness.
Support regulatory and administrative activities by maintaining research documentation and ensuring project activities comply with institutional policies and applicable research requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

MUST be a US Citizen and MUST clear a US government background check
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must possess a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the above requirement, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position with specialized experience that includes: coordinating or supporting multiple research or healthcare projects; facilitating communication among multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders; preparing project reports, presentations, and other written communications; supporting research data collection, tracking, and quality assurance activities; working with electronic medical record data, clinical databases, or other healthcare datasets; and assisting with research administrative and regulatory activities in accordance with applicable institutional policies and data privacy requirements.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of one (1) full year of progressively higher-level graduate education with a major in a field appropriate to the work of this position to substitute for the one year of experience is fully qualifying for this position.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience coordinating complex research or healthcare projects.
Knowledge of clinical research methods, research administration, or healthcare operations.
Ability to independently manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with research regulations, human subjects research, HIPAA, or data privacy requirements.
Experience working with electronic medical records, clinical databases, or other healthcare data sources.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneNote.
Experience supporting scientific publications, grant proposals, or research reporting is preferred.
