Full Job Description

A private employer in the Denver metro / Colorado Front Range area is seeking an experienced Driller / Drilling Equipment Operator for field exploration and subsurface sampling work.

This is a confidential search for a dependable, safety-conscious individual with experience operating drilling equipment, collecting soil and rock samples, performing soil sampling, performing conventional and wireline rock coring, maintaining accurate field records, and working safely around heavy equipment and active project sites.

Responsibilities

Operate truck-mounted or track-mounted drilling equipment.
Advance borings to planned depths based on project requirements.
Perform soil sampling, including split-spoon sampling and related field procedures.
Perform conventional rock coring and wireline coring, where required.
Retrieve, handle, label, protect, and document soil and rock core samples.
Monitor core recovery, rock quality, drilling conditions, tooling performance, and drilling fluid return.
Recognize changes in subsurface conditions and communicate observations to the project team.
Transport drilling equipment, tooling, samplers, rods, augers, core barrels, casing, and support vehicles to project sites.
Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs.
Maintain drilling logs, daily records, equipment logs, core run records, and safety documentation.
Coordinate with field staff, utility locators, contractors, property representatives, and project personnel.
Follow utility clearance procedures, traffic control requirements, site safety requirements, and company safety policies.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.

Required Qualifications

Prior experience as a driller, drilling equipment operator, or highly experienced driller’s assistant.
Experience operating or assisting with truck-mounted or track-mounted drill rigs.
Knowledge of auger drilling, soil sampling, rock coring, and basic drilling safety.
Familiarity with conventional coring and/or wireline coring procedures.
Ability to properly handle, recover, protect, and document rock core samples.
Mechanical aptitude for maintaining and troubleshooting drilling equipment, tooling, pumps, rods, samplers, and core barrels.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Ability to read and follow boring plans, site maps, utility markings, and project instructions.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift and handle drilling tools, rods, augers, core barrels, samplers, and soil/rock samples.
Dependable attendance and willingness to work early mornings, overtime, and occasional out-of-town assignments as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

CDL preferred, or willingness to obtain one.
Experience with CME, Mobile Drill, or similar drilling equipment.
Experience with hollow-stem auger drilling, solid-stem auger drilling, mud rotary, air rotary, conventional coring, and wireline coring.
Experience with HQ, NQ, or similar core barrel systems.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
First Aid / CPR certification.
Experience installing groundwater observation wells or similar field installations.
Ability to perform routine mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance.

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular physical labor, including lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, handling drill rods and tooling, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working outdoors in hot, cold, wet, dusty, and muddy conditions.

Compensation

Competitive pay will be offered based on experience, qualifications, certifications, CDL status, coring experience, and ability to operate drilling equipment independently. Overtime opportunities may be available.
