About the position:
This position is responsible for surgery scheduling, counselling of patients and obtaining insurance authorization for all surgeries.
Job duties:
- Schedules all office and hospital surgery with pre-op and post-op follow up appointments. Prepares consent forms for patient signature for specific surgical procedures. If surgery is scheduled over the telephone and not in person, makes every effort to have patient stop by the office and sign the forms prior to surgery.
- Counsels patients regarding surgery and surgical insurance; both in office and by telephone. Initiates financial arrangements for patients when necessary. Explains patient’s responsibility and/or cash price to be paid the day of surgery.
- Verifies insurance coverage according to procedure, at least 2 days prior to surgery. Verifies effective date of insurance, any pre-existing, and if the effective date is less than a year, what the deductible is and how much of it has the patient met to date. If the patient has not met the deductible explain to patient they must pay prior to surgery.
- Obtains all required certification for surgery. Contacts appropriate personnel at hospital or surgery center to schedule blocked time for surgeon and order appropriate supplies and reserve equipment.
- Works closely with Insurance & Billing departments to ensure correct coding.
Knowledge, skills, abilities required for the position:
· Must demonstrate computer literacy, be able to operate software programs utilized in the practice and utilize (at a minimum) the internet, excel, and word programs.
- Must possess some general medical knowledge including diseases and medications that are pertinent to patient care in ophthalmology.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
· Great attention to detail.
· Ability to work under pressure, communicate, present information, and to multi-task.
· Knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance billing rules and regulations.
· Knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 Coding.
· Knowledge of HIPAA & OSHA regulations.
Physical/Mental requirements:
Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
Required experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Experience obtaining authorizations for surgeries.
- Experience in an ophthalmic practice preferred.
