Registered Nurse (RN) – IDD Nurse Consultant & Clinical Trainer
Northeastern Pennsylvania Human Services LLC (NEPHS)
Allentown / Lehigh Valley, PA
Pay: $48.00 per hour
Schedule: Part-Time | Approximately 20 Hours Per Week
Hours: Primarily Weekdays/Daytime | Flexible, School-Friendly Schedule
A Different Kind of Nursing Position
Northeastern Pennsylvania Human Services LLC (NEPHS) is seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to serve as a part-time Nurse Consultant & Clinical Trainer for our community residential programs supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
This is not a traditional bedside nursing position.
This is an excellent opportunity for an RN who wants to use their clinical knowledge while maintaining a flexible daytime schedule.
The RN will serve as a clinical resource, educator, health-risk coordinator, and quality partner to our residential leadership team and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).
Why This Position May Be a Great Fit
- $48.00 per hour
- Approximately 20 hours per week
- Primarily weekday/daytime hours
- Flexible scheduling
- Potential school-friendly schedule
- No nights or weekend shifts
- Opportunity to teach and mentor staff
- Work primarily as a consultant, trainer, and clinical resource
- Make a meaningful difference in the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities
A typical schedule could be approximately 9:00 AM–2:00 PM, four days per week, although scheduling can be discussed with the successful candidate.
What You'll Do
HRST & Health-Risk Oversight
The RN will help NEPHS effectively maintain and utilize the Health Risk Screening Tool (HRST), including:
- Maintaining and monitoring the HRST system
- Reviewing health-risk information for accuracy and completeness
- Monitoring changes in health-risk scores and clinical indicators
- Identifying health trends requiring follow-up
- Helping residential teams understand identified health risks
- Following up on health-related recommendations and interventions
We want HRST to function as an active health-risk management tool—not simply a documentation requirement.
Medication Administration & Quality Oversight
The RN will provide clinical support to our medication administration system by:
- Reviewing medication administration practices
- Conducting medication and documentation audits
- Identifying medication-error trends
- Assisting with medication-error reviews and corrective-action plans
- Providing medication-related education and retraining
- Supporting medication administration competency
- Helping identify whether errors result from training, communication, documentation, workflow, or system issues
- Promoting accurate and timely reporting of medication errors and near misses
Staff Training
A significant part of this position involves teaching and supporting Direct Support Professionals.
Training topics may include:
- Medication administration and medication-error prevention
- Recognizing changes in health status
- Seizure recognition and response
- Diabetes
- Aspiration and choking prevention
- Feeding-tube training
- Dysphagia
- Constipation and bowel concerns
- Dehydration
- Infection recognition
- Skin integrity
- Fall prevention
- Vital signs
- Emergency response
- Health documentation
- Individual-specific health protocols
You do not need to be a classroom instructor. We are looking for a nurse who can explain medical information clearly and help DSPs understand both what to do and why it matters.
Individual Health & Clinical Consultation
The RN may also:
- Review health histories and medical information
- Monitor significant or chronic health concerns
- Review physician orders and healthcare recommendations
- Review hospital and emergency department discharge instructions
- Assist with health protocols
- Support follow-up after medical appointments
- Participate in interdisciplinary discussions
- Identify emerging health concerns
- Communicate clinical concerns to appropriate leadership
- Assist teams in coordinating healthcare services
Help Us Prevent Problems Before They Become Emergencies
NEPHS is looking for a nurse who notices patterns.
You may help us examine trends involving:
- Medication errors
- Emergency department visits
- Hospitalizations
- Falls
- Seizures
- Aspiration or choking risks
- Constipation
- Infections
- Skin concerns
- Weight changes
- Mobility changes
- Repeated or preventable health concerns
We want our RN to help us determine not only what happened, but why it happened and what we can do differently.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
- Strong clinical judgment
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Comfortable teaching and supporting non-nursing staff
- Ability to travel locally between NEPHS residential homes in the Lehigh Valley
Preferred:

- Chapter 6400 residential experience
- HRST experience
- Medication administration oversight experience
- Staff training experience
- Clinical auditing or quality-improvement experience
Don't have every preferred qualification?
We still encourage experienced RNs who are interested in IDD nursing, teaching, and community-based care to apply.
We are looking for:
A nurse who enjoys teaching.
A nurse who can help DSPs become more confident and knowledgeable.
And most importantly, a nurse who understands that our residential programs are people's homes—not hospitals.
Excellent clinical care must coexist with dignity, independence, choice, privacy, and respect.
