Job Description:
Carpet USA is seeking an experienced Commercial Flooring and Tile Estimator to join our team. This estimator will be responsible for reviewing construction documents, completing accurate material and labor takeoffs, preparing competitive proposals, and supporting projects from the bidding stage through contract award.
The ideal candidate has mid-level estimating experience with commercial flooring and tile projects and understands flooring materials, installation methods, labor requirements, project specifications, and the commercial construction bidding process.
Responsibilities
- Review architectural drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents.
- Prepare accurate quantity takeoffs for commercial flooring and tile projects.
- Estimate material, labor, equipment, freight, waste, and other project costs.
- Develop detailed and competitive proposals within required bid deadlines.
- Identify project scope, exclusions, alternates, allowances, and potential risks.
- Submit requests for information when plans or specifications require clarification.
- Obtain and evaluate pricing from manufacturers, suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Review floor plans, finish schedules, elevations, details, and project specifications.
- Maintain organized bid files, takeoff documentation, vendor quotes, and proposal records.
- Communicate with general contractors, architects, vendors, project managers, and internal team members.
- Attend job walks, pre-bid meetings, and scope review meetings as needed.
- Assist with project handoff after contract award.
- Review contract scope and compare awarded work with the original estimate.
- Update pending bids as needed and follow up with general contractors regarding bid needs.
- Support value-engineering efforts and recommend cost-effective flooring alternatives.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of estimating experience in commercial flooring, tile, or a related construction trade preferred.
- Knowledge of commercial carpet, resilient flooring, LVT, VCT, sheet vinyl, rubber flooring, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, stone, base, and flooring accessories.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, finish schedules, specifications, and construction documents.
- Understanding of flooring installation methods, substrate preparation, moisture mitigation, demolition, transitions, and related scope items.
- Experience preparing labor and material takeoffs.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Outlook.
- Experience with flooring takeoff or estimating software is preferred.
- Experience working with general contractors on commercial construction projects is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; construction-related education is a plus.
Preferred Experience
- Commercial flooring estimating: 3 years
- Commercial tile estimating: 2 years
- Construction plan reading: 3 years
- Estimating or takeoff software: 2 years
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $60,000–$72,000 per year, depending on experience, industry knowledge, and estimating ability.
Work Environment
This is a full-time position based in the Los Angeles area. The role requires regular computer work, communication with project teams and vendors, and occasional travel to project sites, job walks, and pre-bid meetings.
