This is a Temp to Perm career opportunity with a well established commercial electrical contractor. The client uses the temporary period as a trial period to ensure the position is a successful long term fit for both the employee and the company.
During the Temp to Perm period, the employee will be paid hourly. Upon successful completion of the trial period and conversion to full time employment with the client, the position transitions to the client's salaried compensation structure.
The client's intention is to hire the right individual permanently. This is not a short term project or temporary assignment.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday
Typically 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Occasional 6:30 AM start may be required.
The Project Manager reports to the Greensboro office each day and travels to customer locations and active projects as needed.
Projects and customer accounts may extend as far as Raleigh and Charlotte, NC. The employee returns home daily and routine overnight travel is not expected.
Job Description:
A well established Confidential Commercial Electrical Contractor in Greensboro, NC is seeking an experienced Commercial Electrical Project Manager / Estimator to join its team.
This is a hands on leadership position for an experienced commercial electrical professional who understands how electrical work is actually built and installed in the field and is ready to take ownership of projects, customers, field crews, estimating responsibilities, and overall project performance.
This is not strictly an office based Project Manager or Estimator position.
The position is approximately:
70% Project Management and 30% Estimating
70% Field and 30% Office
Candidates do not necessarily need to currently hold the title of Project Manager / Estimator.
The company is open to experienced Commercial Electrical Project Managers, Electrical Estimators, Electrical Superintendents, Electrical Foremen, Lead Electricians, and highly experienced Commercial Electricians who possess the commercial field knowledge, leadership ability, blueprint reading skills, electrical code knowledge, computer aptitude, and customer communication skills necessary to successfully perform the position.
The successful candidate must have enough practical commercial electrical knowledge to understand what is happening on a jobsite, communicate credibly with experienced electricians, recognize potential problems, read electrical drawings, understand applicable electrical codes, and work directly with customers and general contractors.
This position currently involves coordinating approximately four field crews consisting of approximately eight field employees.
The company is also looking for someone with a strong commercial and sales oriented mindset. This does not mean the candidate needs to come from a traditional sales position. It means the individual should be comfortable developing customer relationships, following up on opportunities, representing the company professionally, helping win work, and understanding the importance of profitable projects and repeat business.
Project Management Responsibilities:
- Manage commercial and industrial electrical projects from handoff through successful completion
- Coordinate project schedules, field labor, materials, documentation, customer requirements, and jobsite needs
- Coordinate approximately four electrical field crews consisting of approximately eight employees
- Understand individual employee strengths and coordinate manpower according to project requirements
- Visit active jobsites regularly to monitor progress and address field concerns
- Work directly with electricians and field leadership to resolve technical and project coordination issues
- Maintain communication between field employees, the office, customers, general contractors, suppliers, and company leadership
- Serve as a primary point of contact for customers and general contractors
- Build strong professional relationships that support customer satisfaction and repeat business
- Communicate project status, schedules, changes, requirements, and potential problems
- Coordinate with suppliers regarding material pricing, availability, lead times, and project requirements
- Prepare, price, negotiate, and track change orders and other changes in project scope
- Maintain responsibility for project documentation, customer communication, commitments, and results
- Monitor labor, materials, schedules, and overall project financial performance
- Identify field problems, drawing conflicts, constructability concerns, and potential electrical code issues
- Help resolve problems before they negatively impact project schedules, customers, or field operations
- Support company and project safety expectations
- Manage multiple priorities, customers, projects, deadlines, and field requirements in an organized manner
Estimating Responsibilities:
Approximately 30% of the position involves electrical estimating and preconstruction responsibilities.
The company currently uses Quantum electrical estimating software.
Responsibilities include:
- Review commercial and industrial electrical plans, specifications, bid documents, and scope requirements
- Perform or validate electrical takeoffs
- Review labor requirements and assumptions
- Determine material requirements
- Review supplier quotations and material pricing
- Assist with preparing competitive electrical estimates and bid packages
- Identify drawing conflicts and missing scope
- Identify constructability concerns before work reaches the field
- Recognize potential electrical code concerns
- Assist with bid strategy, project scope, pricing, and commercial considerations
- Follow up on outstanding bids and potential projects
- Communicate with customers and general contractors regarding opportunities
- Support negotiations through project award
- Help determine which opportunities make sense for the company to pursue
- Help turn qualified opportunities into profitable electrical projects
Previous experience with Quantum is beneficial, but candidates with experience using comparable electrical estimating systems may also be considered.
QuickBooks experience is not required.
Candidates must, however, be computer savvy and comfortable learning and using the technology required for project management, estimating, communication, and documentation.
Requirements:
- Strong commercial and/or industrial electrical field experience is required
- Residential only electrical experience is not sufficient for this position
- Strong understanding of commercial electrical construction and field installation
- Ability to read and interpret commercial electrical blueprints, drawings, plans, and specifications
- Strong working knowledge of applicable electrical codes
- Previous experience managing, leading, supervising, coordinating, or estimating commercial electrical work
- Experienced Commercial Electrical Foremen, Superintendents, Lead Electricians, and highly experienced Commercial Electricians may be considered
- Strong field leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with experienced electricians
- Ability to coordinate multiple field crews, employees, schedules, projects, and priorities
- Ability to communicate professionally and confidently with customers and general contractors
- Must be comfortable building and maintaining customer relationships
- Must have strong organizational and follow up skills
- Must be comfortable identifying problems, making decisions, and helping resolve field and project issues
- Must be comfortable working approximately 70% in the field and 30% in the office
- Must be comfortable reporting to the Greensboro office each workday
- Must be comfortable traveling to customer locations and projects throughout the service territory, including projects that may extend as far as Raleigh and Charlotte
- Position is home daily and does not require routine overnight travel
- Strong computer aptitude and willingness to learn company project management and estimating systems
- Must be commercially minded and understand the importance of customer relationships, follow up, profitability, and repeat business
- Must possess the professionalism and communication skills necessary to represent the company directly with customers, contractors, suppliers, and field employees
- Must meet applicable reference, background check, drug screening, driving, and insurance requirements
ONLY candidates with relevant commercial electrical experience will be considered.
This is NOT an entry level position and is NOT a training opportunity for candidates without commercial electrical field experience.
The company's willingness to consider an experienced Commercial Electrical Foreman, Superintendent, Lead Electrician, or similar field professional does not make this an entry level training position. Candidates must already possess a strong commercial electrical foundation, blueprint reading ability, working electrical code knowledge, and relevant field experience.
