Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company is a privately-held U.S. corporation headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1942 as a metallurgical coal and coke producer. Today, Mid-Continent is the leading supplier of small metallurgical coke in North America with 12+ plant locations in the US.

Job Title: Territory Operations Manager

FSLA: Full-time Exempt, Salary

Territory: Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee

Work Environment: 75% travel required/onsite at Plant Locations; 25% Home-based remote work

Position Summary

The MCC Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, compliant, and profitable operations of our coal/coke screening and drying production facilities across the South.

This role oversees day-to-day plant operations, production planning, safety compliance, equipment reliability, quality control, budgeting, personnel management, logistics coordination, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will be a hands-on operational leader who can drive performance, support plant managers, maintain regulatory compliance, and ensure high-quality products are delivered safely and on schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct daily plant operations to meet production targets, customer requirements, and quality expectations.
Plan and coordinate drying, screening, and material handling activities in partnership with plant leadership.
Monitor production rates, equipment utilization, product quality, downtime, and operating costs to optimize plant performance.
Develop and implement production schedules with Plant Managers to meet customer demand and delivery commitments.
Analyze production data and key performance indicators to identify trends, resolve issues, and improve operational results.
Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all operations.
Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, environmental, company, and regulatory requirements.
Conduct and support safety meetings, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
Maintain required permits, records, reports, and regulatory documentation.
Ensure compliance with applicable air, water, dust, noise, and environmental standards.
Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs to support equipment reliability and plant uptime.
Coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel, vendors, and contractors.
Monitor equipment performance and recommend upgrades, replacements, or process changes as needed.
Ensure proper inventory levels of critical spare parts and maintenance supplies.
Hire, train, supervise, coach, and evaluate Plant Managers.
Coordinate staffing schedules to meet production, safety, and operational demands.
Coach teams on safety practices, productivity expectations, quality requirements, and operating procedures.
Address employee performance, attendance, and disciplinary matters in accordance with company policy.
Ensure products meet customer specifications, internal quality standards, and applicable material requirements.
Monitor gradation, moisture content, and other material characteristics.
Work with Plant Managers to develop, implement, and maintain effective quality control programs.
Develop and manage operating budgets for assigned operations.
Monitor production costs, labor expenses, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and cost per ton produced.
Identify and implement opportunities for cost reduction, productivity improvement, and process efficiency.
Prepare production, financial, and operational reports for senior management.
Coordinate with sales, dispatch, and plant leadership to meet customer delivery schedules.
Resolve production-related customer concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Manage inventory levels to support customer demand and operational continuity.
Lead process improvement initiatives that improve safety, quality, productivity, reliability, and cost performance.
Implement lean manufacturing, operational excellence, and continuous improvement practices where appropriate.
Evaluate new technologies, equipment, and process changes that may improve plant performance.
Maintain accurate production, maintenance, quality, safety, and compliance records.
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
Conduct regular meetings with Plant Managers and the Director of Operations.
Coordinate with corporate leadership regarding operational performance, staffing, capital needs, and business priorities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, mining, operations management, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
Five or more years of experience in aggregate, mining, coal/coke, manufacturing, or heavy industrial operations.
Previous supervisory, operations leadership, or plant management experience.
Working knowledge of crushing, screening, drying, material handling, and related production equipment.
Strong understanding of OSHA requirements, safety programs, and industrial compliance practices.
Experience managing budgets, production costs, maintenance expenses, and operational performance metrics.
Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in coal, coke, aggregate, mining, or bulk material processing environments.
Familiarity with lean manufacturing, operational excellence, or continuous improvement methodologies.
Experience tracking KPIs such as production volume, plant uptime, equipment reliability, cost per ton, safety performance, product quality, energy consumption, maintenance cost, on-time delivery, and inventory accuracy.
Experience coordinating with sales, dispatch, maintenance, contractors, and senior leadership.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in both office and industrial plant environments.
Must be able to visit production areas, observe equipment, participate in inspections, and respond to operational issues as needed.
May be exposed to dust, noise, heat, seasonally varied outdoor weather conditions, moving equipment, and other conditions typical of heavy industrial operations.
Must follow all company safety requirements and wear required personal protective equipment while in production areas.
