Full Job Description

Position Summary

AVO Behavioral Health is seeking a compassionate, reliable, and recovery-oriented Peer Support Specialist to join our behavioral health team. The Peer Support Specialist uses their own lived experience with behavioral health, recovery, and/or navigating mental health or substance use services to provide hope, encouragement, advocacy, and practical support to clients and their families.

The Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with clients, families, clinicians, case managers, and other members of the treatment team to promote recovery, independence, self-advocacy, and meaningful community participation.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide peer support and encouragement to clients based on personal lived experience and recovery principles.
Establish supportive, trusting, and professional relationships with clients while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
Help clients identify personal strengths, goals, interests, and resources.
Encourage clients to actively participate in their treatment and recovery plans.
Assist clients with navigating behavioral health services, community resources, and other available supports.
Provide education and support related to coping skills, wellness, recovery, self-advocacy, and community integration.
Assist clients with accessing community resources, appointments, community activities, and other approved services.
Provide safe and reliable transportation for clients to and from appointments, treatment services, community resources, and other approved activities as assigned.
Operate personal, agency, or other authorized vehicles for transportation purposes in accordance with AVO Behavioral Health policies and applicable laws.
Maintain a valid driver's license, required automobile insurance, and a safe driving record as required for the position.
Follow all transportation, vehicle safety, passenger safety, and incident-reporting procedures established by AVO Behavioral Health.
Ensure clients are transported safely and treated with dignity and respect throughout transportation services.
Support clients in developing skills that promote independence and successful community living.
Help clients identify barriers to treatment and develop strategies to overcome those barriers.
Serve as a positive role model for recovery and wellness.
Participate as an active member of the client's treatment team and communicate relevant observations and concerns appropriately.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of peer support and transportation-related services in accordance with AVO Behavioral Health and payer requirements.
Maintain client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable federal, state, and organizational requirements.
Attend required staff meetings, trainings, supervision, and professional development activities.
Follow all AVO Behavioral Health policies, procedures, safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Transportation Requirements

Because transportation may be an essential component of this position, the Peer Support Specialist must:

Possess a valid driver's license and maintain eligibility to drive as required by AVO Behavioral Health.
Maintain required automobile insurance when using a personal vehicle for work-related transportation.
Maintain a safe and responsible driving record.
Ensure the vehicle used to transport clients is safe, properly maintained, and compliant with applicable requirements.
Follow all traffic laws and organizational transportation policies.
Never transport clients while impaired or while engaging in unsafe driving practices.
Properly document transportation services, mileage, destinations, and other information required by AVO Behavioral Health or applicable payers.
Immediately report accidents, safety concerns, or other transportation-related incidents according to company policy.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while transporting clients.
Protect client confidentiality and privacy during transportation.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; additional education in behavioral health, human services, social services, or a related field is preferred.
Must have lived experience with a behavioral health condition, recovery process, substance use recovery, or significant experience navigating behavioral health services.
Must be willing and able to use personal lived experience appropriately to support and empower others.
Peer Support Specialist certification or state-recognized peer support credential is preferred or required based on applicable state and payer requirements.
Previous experience working in behavioral health, community-based services, peer support, case management, or a related field is preferred.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and protect confidential information.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with varying levels of need.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, when required for assigned duties.
Ability to complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.

Work Environment

This position involves providing services in a variety of settings, including the client's home, community, office, and other appropriate locations. The Peer Support Specialist may work with clients who have a wide range of behavioral health needs and should be comfortable working independently while maintaining communication with the treatment team.

The position may require regular driving and transportation of clients. Employees are expected to follow all AVO Behavioral Health transportation and safety policies.
