The Project Engineer is a mid-level engineering position responsible for the implementation, administration, troubleshooting, and operational health of GSD-supported network, server, backup, storage, power, and communications platforms.
This role serves as the primary engineering owner for assigned infrastructure technologies, including Meraki and UniFi networking, Synology and managed backup platforms, server and virtualization infrastructure, UPS and power systems, and BiCom/gloCOM communications. The engineer also supports technical project delivery, escalated incidents, infrastructure alert response, documentation, lifecycle management, and platform standardization.
The position is designed for an engineer who can independently resolve complex infrastructure issues within established standards, execute planned changes and deployments, collaborate effectively with Service Desk and Engineering personnel, and recognize when a condition requires escalation to the Lead Technical Implementation Engineer or Technical Architect.
Role Purpose: Provide dependable ownership of core infrastructure platforms while creating project capacity, improving technical response quality, and reducing dependency on GSD’s senior engineering resources.
Primary ResponsibilitiesNetwork Infrastructure
· Serve as the primary engineering owner for Meraki and UniFi network administration, break-fix support, planned changes, firmware coordination, and configuration maintenance.
· Configure and troubleshoot switching, wireless, VLANs, routing, site-to-site and client VPN connectivity, DHCP, DNS dependencies, and standard firewall-related functions within approved designs.
· Execute network refreshes, wireless deployments, switch replacements, circuit transitions, and client onboarding activities.
· Maintain accurate network diagrams, device records, configurations, warranty and lifecycle information, and as-built documentation in GSD-approved systems.
· Coordinate technical escalations with internet service providers, network vendors, and manufacturer support organizations.
· Identify recurring network conditions, monitoring gaps, and standardization opportunities for review with the Senior Operations Engineer and Technical Architect.
Backup, Storage, and Business Continuity Platforms
· Serve as the primary engineering owner for managed backup, BDR, NAS, Synology, storage, and replication platforms assigned to GSD.
· Investigate backup failures, storage-capacity conditions, replication issues, appliance health events, and recoverability exceptions.
· Perform approved restore testing, recovery validation, backup configuration changes, platform maintenance, and vendor escalation.
· Support the deployment and replacement of backup appliances, NAS devices, storage systems, and related infrastructure.
· Maintain documentation of backup configurations, retention standards, recovery procedures, platform dependencies, and client-specific exceptions.
· Escalate material recoverability risks, repeated failures, or design deficiencies to the appropriate technical and operational leaders.
Server, Virtualization, Power, and Communications
· Perform standard Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, hardware, storage, and infrastructure troubleshooting within established support boundaries.
· Support Hyper-V hosts, virtual machines, server hardware, storage connectivity, and associated infrastructure components.
· Own standard UPS and power-platform administration, alert response, configuration, testing, replacement recommendations, and documentation.
· Administer and troubleshoot BiCom/gloCOM user, device, handset, service, and configuration changes; coordinate vendor escalation when required.
· Support server replacements, infrastructure upgrades, hardware refreshes, voice deployments, and other approved implementation activities.
· Recognize conditions that require advanced infrastructure escalation, architectural review, or formal project remediation. Operational and Project Responsibilities
Escalated Technical Support
· Resolve advanced network, server, backup, storage, power, and communications incidents escalated through GSD’s established support process.
· Provide L3 assistance to the Systems & Escalation Engineer for assigned infrastructure domains without becoming the default owner of the general escalation queue.
· Conduct structured troubleshooting, document diagnostic steps, identify root causes, and provide clear next actions in ConnectWise tickets.
· Coordinate vendor support cases and maintain ownership through resolution, validation, documentation, and closure.
· Identify repeated incidents that should result in a permanent configuration correction, automation, technical standard, or client remediation project.
· Participate in major-incident response when assigned infrastructure platforms are materially affected.
Automated Alert Response
· Serve as the technical resolution owner for valid alerts related to Meraki/UniFi networking, NAS and Synology systems, managed backup platforms, UPS and power systems, and assigned infrastructure services.
· Validate the affected condition, perform approved remediation, document findings, and confirm service restoration before ticket closure.
· Provide actionable feedback to the Senior Operations Engineer regarding noisy alerts, missing diagnostics, incorrect routing, duplicate tickets, or opportunities for self-healing.
· Participate in monitor and remediation validation for assigned platforms while leaving ConnectWise Automate configuration, alert logic, and automated-ticket governance with the Senior Operations Engineer.
· Identify alert patterns that indicate configuration drift, lifecycle risk, insufficient capacity, or a broader design problem.
Project Implementation
· Execute infrastructure work packages based on approved designs and project plans.
· Lead or independently complete standard network, backup, server, storage, UPS, and communications implementations.
· Support complex projects led by the Lead Technical Implementation Engineer.
· Participate in onsite technical discovery, hardware installation, configuration, testing, cutover, stabilization, and client handoff activities.
· Track progress, risks, dependencies, effort, and technical decisions in the designated project-management system.
· Complete as-built documentation, configuration records, diagrams, credential placement, and support-transition requirements before project closure.
· Escalate design deviations and material scope changes rather than implementing unsupported solutions without approval.
Platform Ownership and Proactive Maintenance
· Maintain current operational knowledge of assigned platforms and act as GSD’s primary internal point of contact for those technologies.
· Perform recurring health, firmware, capacity, configuration, warranty, and lifecycle reviews as assigned.
· Maintain platform runbooks, implementation standards, support procedures, and troubleshooting guidance.
· Train and mentor Service Desk, Escalation, and Implementation personnel on appropriate support procedures for assigned platforms.
· Review client-specific deviations and ensure exceptions are documented and do not unintentionally become company-wide standards.
· Partner with the Technical Architect on design standards and with the Senior Operations Engineer on monitoring, automation, and maintenance requirements.
Required Qualifications
· Three or more years of progressive experience in systems administration, network engineering, infrastructure support, or managed services.
· Hands-on experience troubleshooting Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, virtualization, storage, and common infrastructure services.
· Working experience with business-class networking, including switching, wireless, VLANs, routing, VPNs, DHCP, DNS, and network troubleshooting.
· Experience administering Meraki, UniFi, or comparable network platforms.
· Experience supporting backup, BDR, NAS, replication, or storage platforms.
· Ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical conditions using a structured and evidence-based approach.
· Experience performing technical changes and implementations in production client environments.
· Strong written documentation, ticket-note, and client-communication skills.
· Ability to work onsite as required for discovery, deployment, troubleshooting, cutover, and remediation activities.
· Ability to manage competing project, operational, and escalation priorities while communicating risks and status clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience working in a multi-client managed service provider environment.
· Direct experience with ConnectWise Manage, ConnectWise Automate, and ScreenConnect.
· Experience with Synology, SLIDE, Datto, Hyper-V, Eaton UPS, BiCom/gloCOM, Barracuda, SentinelOne, DNSFilter, or comparable platforms.
· Working knowledge of Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Entra ID, Intune, and Azure services.
· PowerShell scripting or infrastructure automation experience.
· Experience creating network diagrams, as-built documentation, technical runbooks, and implementation checklists.
