GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Lower Elementary Assistant works closely with the Lower Elementary Guide to maintain the Prepared Environment and assist in student enrichment and classroom management.
JOB SCOPE
Collaborates with Lower Elementary Guide and other school professionals to meet the needs of all students emotionally, socially, and academically. May be asked to help organize field trips, or to work with room parents for organizing classroom activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists in the preparation of curriculum materials

Assists in preparing and maintaining the prepared Montessori environment

Meets with the Lower Elementary Guide to learn about the classroom and recess duties and responsibilities towards the beginning of the academic year

Assists with the care and maintenance of classroom materials, maintaining an orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition

Meets with guides during a scheduled weekly meeting, keeping notes in TEAMS
-
Greets students in morning carpool, ensuring their safety as they exit their vehicle
-
Commits to best practices in Montessori education and professional development

Follow through as needed with individualized student needs, including accommodations for Learning Profiles
-
Checks work and maintain written records for each student as needed and notify guides of trends or patterns
- Assists guide with organizing and preparing weekly homework packets

Works with individual and small groups of students as directed by the Lower Elementary Guide

As needed, reports all accidents/incidents at once. Completes Incident Report and delivers copies of the same to parent and School Nurse

Shares responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of the students
-
Supervises students during lunch prep, lunch, and recess
-
Refers parents to classroom guides for details about students
-
Assist with group interviews for prospective students
-
Participates in a regular evaluation process including classroom observations, self-evaluation, and annual goal setting
-
Support guide with implemented guidelines and expectations for behavior in the classroom and during other on-campus/off-campus trips and events
-
Shares with Lower Elementary Guide any observation regarding student behavior, relaying information directly to Director of Lower Elementary when necessary or in the absence of the Lower Elementary Guide

Plan field trips and outings in collaboration with Guide, room parents, Outdoor Ed. Coordinator or Director

Attends school, community, and/or parent education events as detailed in the Employee Handbook or as assigned by Director of Lower Elementary

Attends and actively participates in Teaching Assistant meetings, Lower Elementary meetings and other meetings as assigned
-
Walks with students to ASE, After School Activities, or afternoon carpool. Assist students/ Lower Elementary Guide as required
-
Takes the lead in the classroom in the absence of the Lower Elementary Guide
-
Refers parent questions and/or concerns to Lower Elementary Guide
-
Attends and actively participates in Lower Elementary Teaching Assistant meetings, and other meetings as assigned
-
Complies with the content of the Employee Handbook for all other expectations and duties not listed

Other duties as assigned by the Director of Lower Elementary and Head of School
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
-
Completes bus drivers training and drives students in an Alcuin school bus as needed for school related activities
-
Mentors new Lower Elementary Assistants as requested by the Director of Lower Elementary
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Required:

Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.

Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing

Bachelor’s Degree
-
Strong Interpersonal skills
-
2+ years working with children

Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of products
-
Ability to interact and communicate professionally with colleagues, students, parents, and others in the school community and during off-campus school related activities

Ability to function as a team with colleagues and Director of Lower Elementary, and with other administrators as required
- Willing to take Montessori Classroom Assistant’s Training, if recommended

JOB CONDITIONS

Occasionally lift classroom supplies/equipment weighing up to 20 lbs.

Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods of time daily

Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks such as at a computer keyboard

Work desk positioned to have eye view of the classroom main and rear entrances

Helps set up classroom environment and student work supplies

Works in standard office climate and conditions

Participates and serves as chaperone during day/overnight camping and class trips as required

Works outdoors supervising students at carpool and on school trips
