Coating Crew Lead

Granite Peak Fabrication's purpose is to design and build the best processing equipment in the oil and gas business! We specialize in ASME Code and Non-code Vessels, LACT/meter skids, water transfer/salt water disposal units, and other custom designed equipment to meet our customers' needs. We offer competitive pay and opportunities for growth. We are seeking an experienced Coating Crew Lead for our Casper, Wyoming location.

The Coating Crew Lead is a working lead position. In addition to applying coatings alongside the crew, the Crew Lead is directly responsible for the team’s overall performance in three areas: quality, production, and cleanliness of the paint department.

Minimum Job Requirements:

5+ years of protective coating application experience

2+ years leading a crew or acting in a lead/supervisory capacity in a shop environment preferred

Candidate is familiar with NACE/AMPP and SSPC industry standards

Strong organization, communication, and teamwork skills

Ability to hold a crew accountable to quality, production, and housekeeping standards while working alongside them

Take pride in executing with a high degree of accuracy and precision

Ability to lift 50lbs and push/pull heavy objects

Ability to perform maintenance, rebuild, troubleshoot coating equipment

Ability to prioritize and assign tasks across a crew

Initiative to be self-motivated yet be able to work with others

Function well in a high-paced, and at times, stressful environment

Job Responsibilities:

Crew Leadership – Quality, Production & Cleanliness

Own the crew’s performance: the Crew Lead is accountable for the quality of every coated item, the shift’s production output, and the cleanliness of the paint department and equipment.

Plan and assign daily work across the crew to meet shop loading and shift production targets; balance manpower between blast, prep, masking, application, and touch-up.

Perform quality checks periodically throughout the day on the crew’s work. Any item not painted to GPF standards must be called out and corrected before it moves downstream.

Set the standard on housekeeping: work areas, booths, and equipment are cleaned after coatings are applied, and the department is kept audit- and customer-tour-ready at all times.

Train, coach, and develop crew members on application technique, PDS compliance, and GPF quality standards; address performance issues early and escalate to the Paint Manager as needed.

Lead by example on safety – ensure PPE, respiratory protection, and confined-space requirements are followed by the entire crew.

Coating Execution (Working Lead)

Follow work instructions and material handling procedures without skipping any steps as the work produced must meet the highest standards for our customers.

Review customer specifications, paint data sheets (PDS) and internal job travelers with the crew prior to starting.

Work with QC on collecting working environment data prior to starting work to ensure the coating mixed will be applied in acceptable tolerances per PDS.

Ensure protective masking and tape are applied to protect surfaces that should not have coating applied. Ensure all surfaces are clear of debris and blast media.

Provide communication to QC for all inspections. Confirm all paint has correct mils applied per PDS, no holidays showing, all runs sanded and repaired prior to calling for a QC inspection.

Ensure QC has signed off on all projects prior to arranging transportation.

Department Support

Inform Paint Manager of upcoming project consumable needs and track department inventory.

Inform Paint Manager of all equipment failures; troubleshoot and provide solutions for repairs.

Report daily production status, quality issues, and manpower needs to the Paint Manager.

Experience:

Previous experience in a similar lead or senior technician role preferred

Proficient in lean manufacturing principles

Strong mechanical knowledge and aptitude

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings

Familiarity with hand tools and precision measuring instruments

Experience operating cranes, forklifts, welders, and machining tools

Knowledge of airless paint spraying techniques
