POSITION PURPOSE
The Sport Lab Technician is responsible for supporting custom sport coating requests through color development, sample preparation, formula support, laboratory testing, quality control, and customer communication. This position plays an important role in fulfilling sample and formula requests, supporting custom paint orders, maintaining accurate order data, and ensuring timely, high-quality service for internal teams and external customers, including sports organizations, distribution partners, contractors, architects, and sales representatives. The Sport Lab Technician contributes to product quality, customer satisfaction, and cross-functional coordination by combining strong technical skills, attention to detail, and responsive communication and contributes to a positive team atmosphere.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DUTIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1+ year of experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, quality, customer service, or related environment
- Familiarity with color theory, color matching, color standards, or visual comparison of samples against established standards
- Ability to compare products and samples against established color or finish standards and identify and resolve issues to ensure quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction
- Experience with FTIR instrumentation or similar analytical testing equipment is a plus
- Basic math skills, including the ability to work with measurements, ratios, and simple calculations
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
- Working knowledge of PC functions and Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, able to work independently as well as part of a team, displays initiative, and demonstrates a problem-solving approach
- Ability to work effectively and cross-functionally throughout the organization, including Sales, Account Services, Production, Transportation, and Quality
JOB DUTIES:
- Fulfill customer requests for custom paint samples, formulas, and related support for sport applications.
- Perform color matching and sample preparation using established standards, tools, and procedures.
- Communicate with customers to clarify requests, answer questions, and provide timely follow-up by email and phone.
- Prepare, label, package, and ship sample cards, sample boards, and other materials.
- Blend and prepare custom paints and lab batches according to established formulas and procedures.
- Measure, document, and maintain accurate blend and formula records.
- Scale formulas for production and provide formula documentation to internal teams as needed.
- Conduct routine lab testing, such as color, viscosity, and gloss checks.
- Operate and maintain lab equipment, including FTIR instrumentation, as needed.
- Track custom order requests, deadlines, complaints, and related data in Excel or other systems.
- Work closely with Sales, Account Services, Production, Transportation, and other internal teams to support customer needs.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and follow all company safety and quality standards.
- Able and willing to work necessary hours to meet all project deadlines, travel when necessary.
- Develop mutually beneficial, respectful, and effective relationships with peers to ensure seamless coordination between departments, maximize synergy, and maintain a shared vision, strategy, and focus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Must be able to bend, climb stairs, and continuously stand or walk 75% of the time.
- Must be able to move within the office and plant to reach file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must be able to use dexterity to handle small safety equipment and/or hazardous material.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by listening and also in both written and verbal forms.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Generally, works in a manufacturing environment but is also required to perform job duties in a typical office setting.
- This position regularly requires large amounts of time to be spent using manufacturing equipment, which generally entails regular and repetitive motions along with exposure to loud noises. All safety procedures should be adhered to in these situations.
- This position also requires some amount of time to be spent using computer equipment, which entails regular and repetitive motions.
- Will regularly be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals. All safety procedures should be adhered to in each of these situations.
- Subject to working near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment where use of appropriate safety equipment is required.
- Work includes indoor and outdoor environment during possible adverse weather conditions.

Compensation for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range provided. The compensation range listed above may encompass base salary, performance-based bonuses, and commission opportunities, if applicable.
