Full Job Description

Overview

The Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse (RN) performs pre-operative assessments to determine patient readiness for scheduled orthopedic procedures. The RN reviews medical history, medications, allergies, and diagnostic results to identify surgical or anesthesia risks and determine the need for additional testing or clearance. The RN coordinates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare team members to ensure patients are appropriately prepared and cleared for surgery.

Responsibilities

Conduct and document comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including medical and surgical history, medications, allergies, prior anesthesia history, and relevant health conditions.
Review laboratory results, EKGs, imaging, diagnostic testing, and medical clearances to determine surgical readiness and identify potential risks or concerns.
Identify and escalate abnormal findings or patients requiring additional testing, medical evaluation, specialty consultation, or anesthesia review.
Coordinate required testing, medical clearances, and follow-up with patients, providers, surgeons, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to ensure all requirements are completed prior to surgery.
Reconcile medications and provide patients with appropriate pre-operative instructions, including medication management, NPO requirements, arrival time, transportation, and procedure-specific preparation.
Educate patients regarding the pre-operative process, address questions within the RN's scope of practice, and reinforce instructions as needed.
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Communicate effectively with patients, surgeons, anesthesia providers, scheduling staff, and the perioperative team to support safe and efficient surgical planning.
Follow established clinical protocols, HIPAA, infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory requirements.
Support quality improvement initiatives and processes that promote patient safety, surgical readiness, and efficient patient flow.
Provide professional, compassionate, and patient-centered care.
Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or eligible compact-state license
Current certification as a BLS & ACLS Healthcare Provider
Minimum of one (1) year of professional nursing experience
Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills.
Ability to recognize abnormal findings and appropriately escalate clinical concerns.
Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other healthcare team members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in pre-admission testing, pre-operative nursing, ambulatory surgery, PACU, ICU, emergency department, medical-surgical nursing, or another acute-care setting.
Experience with orthopedic surgical patients.
Experience reviewing pre-operative laboratory testing, EKGs, diagnostic studies, and medical clearances.
Experience working directly with anesthesia providers or perioperative teams.
PALS certification.
CNOR, CPAN, CAPA, or other relevant perioperative certification.

Personal Qualifications: Must exhibit courteous communication skills and the ability to work with others, exercising good judgment in the performance of job duties. Presents self in a positive manner as reflected by personal attire and etiquette.

Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday; communicate effectively with patients and staff; operate standard clinical and office equipment; and occasionally assist with patient movement or other activities consistent with the ambulatory surgery center environment.

Pay: From $34.00 per hour
