Full Job Description

Below you will find the duties and responsibilities of the Family Advocate who reports directly to the Shelter Supervisor. In the absence of the Shelter Supervisor, the Family Advocate will report directly to the Executive Director:

Reports to: Shelter Supervisor

Position Responsibilities:

§ Provide emotional support, active listening, trauma-informed, client centered individual counseling, and group counseling services to victims of domestic violence in order that they may reconcile their feelings regarding the domestic violence they have experienced.

§ Provide victims of abuse with individual counseling, advocacy, and information/referrals to address and meet their immediate needs of safety, medical services, and other basic needs (i.e. food, clothing, shelter, and school uniforms/supplies).

§ Provide victims of abuse with individual and group counseling to assist them in exploring their options and resources, and working towards accomplishing their goals and objectives.

§ Cover 24-hour crisis line and provide callers with crisis intervention, telephone counseling, assistance in identifying safety options and strategies, telephone intakes/ assessments, and information/referrals.

§ Complete in-person intakes for adults and children entering the shelter, and provide them with safety planning and service planning

§ Provide shelter clients with crisis intervention services.

§ Provide civil legal advocacy/OP and VCVA orientation services to inform clients of their rights and remedies under these acts.

§ Provide information and referrals to clients for court, mainstream benefits, employment and educational assistance, etc.

§ Complete adult and children’s service plans, and update service plan documents with follow-up dates of services provided.

§ Provide family counseling to promote stronger bonds between parents and their children.

§ Provide children with individual and group counseling services that will enhance their self-esteem, enhance their social living skills, enhance their overall personal growth, and foster long-term growth and development.

§ Provide age appropriate education to children regarding domestic violence to assist them in identifying and reconciling their feelings regarding the abuse they have witnessed/experienced.

§ Educate children on non-violent conflict resolution skills.

§ Provide clients with services that are culturally sensitive and trauma-informed.

§ Prepare monthly reports and assist in the auditing of client files on a monthly basis.

§ Close out client files weekly and monthly as appropriate.

§ Participate in staff meeting and training seminars.

§ Complete all documentation on primary assigned clients (update goal sheet every three days, complete outtake, etc.)

§ Assist the Housekeeper with the upkeep of the shelter.

§ Supervise the clients with their chores.

§ Encourage a positive atmosphere for the shelter/ community living environment.

§ Provide no less than 20 hours per week in documented counseling hours.

§ Enforce all house rules and take the appropriate steps to write notices of caution when rules are not followed.

§ Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts Degree required.

The shifts are 2 mid-shifts and 1 overnight.
