Research Specialist / Research Assistant

Department of Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine
University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine

The Zhou Laboratory at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented Research Specialist or Research Assistant for an academic hourly position of approximately 40 hours per week.

Our laboratory investigates the intersection of vascular biology, immunology, and regenerative medicine, with a particular focus on how the lung vascular niche regulates tissue injury, repair, and regeneration. More information about our research can be found at https://www.the-zhou-lab.com.

This position is ideal for a dedicated researcher who is interested in contributing to high-impact biomedical research in a collaborative and fast-paced academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Research

Perform routine and specialized laboratory techniques, including mammalian cell culture, PCR and genotyping, immunostaining, tissue processing, and confocal microscopy.
Assist with experimental planning, data collection, documentation, and analysis.
Maintain accurate and well-organized laboratory records, protocols, and experimental results.

Animal Research

Assist with mouse colony management, breeding, genotyping, and recordkeeping.
Perform or assist with basic in vivo procedures, including intraperitoneal injections, tissue collection, and sample preparation.
Support animal experiments in compliance with institutional animal care and research protocols.

Laboratory Operations

Prepare reagents and laboratory materials, including aliquoting solutions, autoclaving supplies, and organizing samples.
Monitor laboratory inventory and coordinate purchasing of reagents, supplies, and equipment.
Assist the principal investigator with laboratory administrative tasks, including tracking research expenses, managing purchasing records, and monitoring grant-related accounts.
Help maintain a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment.

Team Support

Provide technical and organizational support to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other laboratory members.
Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to ongoing projects in vascular biology, immunology, and regenerative medicine.
Work collaboratively while also managing assigned responsibilities independently.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, molecular biology, or a related field.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Ability to commit to the position for at least one year.

Preferred

Master’s degree or at least two years of hands-on wet-laboratory research experience.
Experience with cell culture, PCR, immunostaining, microscopy, or molecular biology techniques.
Previous experience with mouse handling, colony management, injections, tissue harvesting, or experimental surgery.
Familiarity with laboratory purchasing, inventory management, or research administration.

Recent graduates who are passionate about lung biology, vascular biology, immunology, or regenerative medicine are strongly encouraged to apply. This position may be particularly valuable for candidates planning to pursue a PhD, MD, or other advanced biomedical degree in the future.
