Full Job Description

Job Summary:

Collects and performs lab tests on blood and body fluids to help physicians/providers diagnose and treat ailments and diseases. Maintain collection areas and equipment, properly identify patients, and correctly use phlebotomy methods. Perform record keeping duties to include clerical, computer data entry, phone calls, memos, and specimen processing functions. Aid/assist all lab techs with various tasks as applicable to lab duties. Employee should establish and maintain professional relationships with their patients.

Essential Job Duties:

· Adhere to all CDC recommendations and OSHA requirements

· Know lab safety rules

· Master communication skills with people of all ages

· Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts

· Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for ordered samples/tests

· Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or other means

· Obtain blood and other specimens as ordered by a licensed health care provider

· Correctly label the specimen collection tubes with patient’s name, DOB, time of collection, source, collector’s initials, etc.

· Preserve, distribute, and/or dispose of specimens according to lab guidelines

· Properly dispose of contaminated needles and sharps

· Performs clinical testing on potentially biohazardous specimens

· Follows lab protocol for abnormal results

· Processes samples sent to reference labs

· Records results and work performed, gives verbal and written reports, files lab slips, fax reports, perform data entry, track patient reports, and other clerical duties as assigned

· Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate clinical personnel

· Maintain and stock inventory supplies

· Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate, to ensure that all is in working order

· Maintains all appropriate maintenance logs

· Performs quality control procedures and records results

· Performs some troubleshooting on equipment malfunctions with assistance from higher positioned lab techs, and notifies the lab manager of ongoing issues

· Performs miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor to fulfill departmental objectives

· Must demonstrate the ability to complete tests and tasks in an accurate and efficient manner

· Helps develop departmental policies and procedures for test performance/QC

· Reports activities and pending work to oncoming lab techs

· Handles primary operator duties, projects, regulatory compliance, and process improvements

· Independent judgement and responsibility

· Provides positive leadership

· Assists in training new employees

· Supervises the lab in the absence of the lab manager

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Education/Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory sciences* or Nursing

*Acceptable degrees are biological, chemical, or laboratory science degrees.

2. Skills: Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.

3. Physical Effort: Work requires frequent sitting and typing. Work requires occasional walking, stooping/bending, climbing, and lifting up to 25 lbs.

4. Understand that, due to their occupational exposure to blood and other potential infectious material, they are at risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis, and other illnesses.

5. Works under the supervision of the Lab Manager.

6. Employee functions as a team player, attendance is dependable and respectful of coworkers, works toward professional goals, and contributes to a professional working environment within the department

7. Maintains confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

- overall understanding of each analyzer/kit test and how each function

- troubleshoot when there are problems with the instruments

- order patient tests, perform daily maintenance, order QC, and order calibrations on the instruments

- recognize an abnormal patient or QC result, understand how to resolve the issue, and follow correct protocol in reporting patient critical results

- how to change the reagents, chemicals, cleaning products, etc. for each instrument

- performing proficiency testing for the menu of tests in the lab

- knowledgeable of maintenance schedule/requirements for each instrument
