Associate Attorney – Immigration, Post-Conviction Relief & Civil Litigation

Position: Associate Attorney
Practice Areas: Immigration Law, Post-Conviction Relief, Personal Injury & Civil Litigation
License Required: Active California Bar License
Spanish: Preferred, but not required

We are a busy, fast-paced law firm seeking a motivated and highly organized Associate Attorney to join our team. Our practice handles a diverse caseload involving immigration law, post-conviction relief, personal injury, and other civil litigation matters.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys being challenged, wants meaningful responsibility, and thrives in an environment where no two days are exactly the same. The ideal candidate is proactive, dependable, comfortable managing multiple matters and deadlines, and genuinely enjoys staying busy.

Responsibilities

The Associate Attorney will work on a diverse caseload that may include:

Immigration

Removal and deportation defense before the Immigration Courts;
Applications for lawful permanent residency and adjustment of status;
Naturalization and citizenship matters;
Family-based petitions and other immigration matters;
Preparing clients and witnesses for hearings and interviews;
Appearing before Immigration Courts and immigration agencies as required; and
Conducting consultations with prospective clients, evaluating potential cases, and advising individuals regarding immigration options, risks, and strategies.

Post-Conviction Relief

Handling post-conviction relief matters, including cases involving immigration consequences;
Reviewing criminal records, plea agreements, transcripts, and court files;
Researching criminal and immigration consequences of prior convictions;
Drafting motions, declarations, briefs, and supporting pleadings; and
Appearing in court on post-conviction matters as required.

Personal Injury & Civil Litigation

Assisting with and managing personal injury and other civil litigation matters from intake through resolution;
Evaluating potential claims and conducting consultations with prospective clients;
Drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, correspondence, settlement demands, and other litigation documents;
Conducting and responding to written discovery;
Reviewing medical records, damages documentation, evidence, and other case materials;
Conducting legal and factual research relating to liability, damages, procedure, and other litigation issues;
Communicating and negotiating with opposing counsel, insurance carriers, and other parties;
Preparing for and participating in depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, hearings, and other proceedings;
Assisting with trial preparation and appearing in court as required; and
Maintaining litigation calendars and ensuring compliance with discovery, motion, and court deadlines.

General Responsibilities

In addition to practice-specific work, the Associate Attorney will be expected to:

Conduct thorough legal research on a wide variety of issues and questions that arise in the firm's practice;
Produce clear, persuasive, and well-supported legal writing;
Communicate directly with clients and keep them informed regarding their matters;
Conduct prospective-client consultations and assist in evaluating potential cases;
Independently manage deadlines and maintain an organized caseload;
Work collaboratively with attorneys and support staff;
Identify legal and procedural issues proactively rather than waiting for them to become problems; and
Take ownership of assigned matters while recognizing when an issue requires additional research, discussion, or supervision.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must:

Be an active member in good standing of the State Bar of California;
Be willing and able to appear in court;
Possess strong legal research and writing skills;
Have excellent organizational and time-management skills;
Be able to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously;
Be comfortable communicating directly with clients and prospective clients;
Exercise sound judgment and professionalism when advising clients;
Be willing to learn and work across multiple practice areas; and
Be motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred, but is not required;
Prior immigration law experience;
Prior removal defense or courtroom experience;
Experience with post-conviction relief or criminal-immigration issues;
Personal injury or civil litigation experience;
Experience with discovery, depositions, motion practice, or trial preparation; and
Experience conducting client consultations.

Strong legal research and writing skills are particularly important, as the attorney will frequently be called upon to research and analyze miscellaneous legal issues as they arise.
