Full Job Description

The Bakery Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining various types of food processing and packaging machinery. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the efficient production of high-quality food products while adhering to strict safety, sanitation, and quality standards. The ideal candidate will be mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and committed to workplace safety.

Role and Responsibilities

Ensure work areas are safe from hazards, participate in safety discussions, weekly safety talks and follow safety practices and policies.
Helps promote a safe workplace through observation, action and participation. Actively communicates with peers to promote a safe work environment.
Set up and calibrate food processing and packaging machinery according to production schedules and product specifications.
Operate machinery, including but not limited to mixers, fillers, depositors, ovens, slicers, sealers, labelers, and case packers.
Continuously monitor machine operations to ensure they are running correctly and efficiently, making adjustments as necessary.
Perform routine quality checks on raw materials, in-process products, and finished goods to ensure they meet company and regulatory standards.
Troubleshoot minor machine malfunctions and perform basic preventative maintenance tasks (e.g., cleaning, lubrication, minor adjustments).
Report any major equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the Production Supervisor or Maintenance Department immediately.
Accurately complete production logs, quality control documentation, and other required paperwork.
Adhere to all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles, and company safety policies and procedures.
Maintain a clean and organized work area, including cleaning and sanitizing equipment as required.
Assist with material handling, including loading raw materials into machines and removing finished products.
Work collaboratively with other team members, including other operators, quality assurance personnel, and maintenance staff.
Participate in training programs as required.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Team Leader or Production Supervisor.
Packaging operators will ensure labels are compliant with spec sheets and documented on daily paperwork and turned in daily.
Changeover paperwork will be documented and signed by the operator and turned in daily.
Operator will ensure labels are removed from production from label changes and stored in locked label area. Operator will ensure current label, packaging are being used in production according to spec sheets and documented on daily paperwork.
Continuously improve on learning all products and requirements to make them properly.
Ensure that all areas of responsibility are kept as clean as possible during the run and at the conclusion of the run, that all equipment, raw materials, and waste are placed in their proper locations.
Actively communicates with other Bakery team members and supervisors to identify and resolve challenges while improving operational efficiencies.
Performs routine safety checks to ensure workspace is free from potential safety risks while working with overall bakery team to promote a safe workplace environment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience operating machinery in a food manufacturing or similar production environment preferred.
Experience with specific types of food processing/packaging machinery (e.g., Tromp, Delta, Moline, Delkor) is a plus.
High mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills.
Ability to read and understand machine manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and production orders.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality products.
Good communication skills, both verbal and written, utilizing the English language.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Understanding of GMPs, HACCP, and food safety principles.
Ability to follow instructions and adhere to safety protocols strictly.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and different shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods (e.g., 8-10 hours).
Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching.
Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Ability to work in an environment with varying temperatures and noise levels.
Visual acuity to monitor machine operations and product quality.
