Full Job Description

OPHTHALMIC TECHNICIAN

JOB SUMMARY

The Ophthalmic Technician assists the doctors in caring for patients. They receive patients into the practice and prepare them to see the doctors by collecting information and performing tests.

JOB DUTIES

Escort patients from waiting room to examination room. Communicate to the patient who you are and what you are preparing to do to them. Such as, refractive testing and instilling eye drops.

Complete all necessary and appropriate chart work, performed as rapidly as possible by confirming history data and medical needs.

Make certain that the visual acuity with/without glasses is accurately recorded for each patient on their chart.

Determine the correct power of all glasses that the patient has by lensometer and the wearing habits they utilize with each pair.

Perform manifest refraction at distance and near. Perform fusion tests, when appropriate. Perform color blindness and stereopsis test on appropriate patients.

For potential contact lens wearers, measure both the tear flow and the corneal sensitivity.

Check intraocular pressures using tonometer and tonopen.

Instill drops into patients eyes. Remove and instill contact lenses.

Measure pupil diamter, pupillary reactions and check for afferent pupillary defects.

Perform tests such as Autorefraction, OCT, Visual Fields and Fundus Photography.

Clean exam rooms and equipment as necessary.

Complete home study course within first year of employment.

Reports to Clinical Coordinator.

Assists Doctors or Technicians as necessary.

Assists Front Office staff if time permits. (answering phones or greeting patients)

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Ophthalmic experience preferred, but not necessary. Knowledge of medications and illnesses would be beneficial. Prefer good handwriting and spelling for documenting in records. Must have good people skills and be able to work with the elderly public in a positive manner. Must be a self-starter with the ability to anticipate needs and be prepared. This person needs to be able to function well in a fast paced environment. Must be willing and adaptable to change.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
