Full Job Description

Opioid and Substance Support Specialist/Advocate

As part of Pasco Kids First’s mobile outreach department, the Opioid and Substance Support Specialist/Advocate will provide prevention education, awareness raising and referral services throughout the community on mission related topics based on their own lived experience. This will take place through community events, schools, social groups, partner agencies and through client referral meetings. A specific goal of this position is to raise the community’s awareness of the connection between substance abuse (specifically opioids) and child abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Candidate must have previous prevention and education experience and be skilled in community outreach, public speaking and interacting with diverse audiences. Experience with substance abuse/addictions, case management, crisis intervention, child protection or other lived experience is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. This position is expected to work evenings and weekends.

About Pasco Kids First

Pasco Kids First, Inc. was launched in 1989 to keep kids safe and strengthen families through the prevention, assessment and treatment of child abuse and neglect. The agency is the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) for Pasco County operating both Child Protection and Trauma Therapy teams as well as the Healthy Families program which serves both Pasco and Hernando Counties. PKF is an accredited member of the National Children’s Alliance, and the Trauma Treatment Program is the only designated Sexual Abuse Treatment Program and is a recognized leader in trauma therapy, setting the standard for excellence in Pasco and Hernando counties.

Overview of Position

The position is responsible for the following tasks, including but not limited to:

Work with Outreach Manager on outreach plan and implementation
Conduct various outreach events including home visits, one to one peer support meetings with families being impacted by from substances particularly opioids
Assist in creating outreach material and marketing items
Provide case management, supportive peer support and referrals for clients and the general community
Help implement outreach schedule to ensure program fluency
Attend and frequent community events, partner agency meetings and others
Collect, track and report data to internal and external sources as needed
Conduct presentations and sessions as requested
Collaborate with PKF staff to maximize exposure at events and community initiatives
Work with community partners to cross-promote information and prevention strategy

Position Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology education, public health or related discipline
One to two years’ experience in prevention education or case management
Possess knowledge and experience with community outreach initiatives, especially around substance abuse prevention, child abuse/neglect or similar
Have skills in supportive peer support, crisis management and conflict resolution
Have superior interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with diverse populations
Familiar with local community resources and referral processes
Have a creative and innovative spirit and be comfortable being “on the go”
Be comfortable driving a truck and pulling, backing, and unhooking an 8-10,000 pound trailer.
Be willing and physically capable of setting up and working outdoor events for extended periods.

Additional Position Information

This is a part time (approximately 20 hours/week), outreach position and the incumbent can expect to be on the road and in the community most of the week. The schedule will be built around community events and program needs. Evening and weekend work can be expected.

Salary Range: $21.15 - $25.00 with possible adjustment based on experience.
