About Quasar Instruments
Quasar Instruments is an established and growing laboratory systems company serving clinical and forensic laboratories throughout the United States. We partner with a leading global instrument manufacturer to sell, implement, and support advanced mass spectrometry systems and laboratory solutions.
At Quasar Instruments, we are focused on continued growth, strong business practices, and building systems and teams that can grow with us. We value people who take ownership, solve problems, improve the way things are done, and want to make a meaningful contribution to the organization.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced accounting professional who is ready for more than simply managing the numbers—someone who wants to take the next step from doing and supervising accounting work to leading an Accounting Department.
The Head of Accounting will lead and develop the Accounting team, strengthen financial systems and controls, improve processes, and help shape how the department supports the continued growth of Quasar Instruments.
This is a department leadership role, not simply a senior accounting position.
You need strong practical accounting expertise and must be willing to step into the work when necessary. Your primary job, however, is to lead the team, provide financial visibility, improve the department, and ensure Accounting performs at a high level.
What You'll Own
Accounting & Financial Operations
Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness of:
· Accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, and collections
· General ledger activity and account reconciliations
· Bank reconciliations
· Month-end and year-end closing
· Financial statements and management reporting
· Cash-flow monitoring and forecasting
· Payroll-related accounting and reconciliations
· Budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
· Fixed assets and other balance sheet accounts
· Coordination with outside accountants, tax professionals, banks, auditors, and other financial partners
Maintain appropriate review procedures and internal controls to protect company assets and support accurate financial reporting.
The Head of Accounting is accountable for the quality and completion of the department's work without needing to personally perform every accounting function.
Team Leadership
· Lead, coach, and develop the Accounting team.
· Establish clear roles, responsibilities, expectations, and performance standards.
· Delegate effectively while remaining accountable for department results.
· Hold employees accountable while providing the training, guidance, and resources necessary for success.
· Cross-train team members and reduce dependence on any one employee's knowledge.
· Promote collaboration, communication, ownership, and professional development.
· Build a stable, capable, and accountable department.
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
· Develop, document, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and SOPs.
· Continuously evaluate accounting workflows for accuracy, efficiency, consistency, and risk.
· Identify recurring problems and implement solutions that address root causes.
· Strengthen internal controls and reduce dependence on individual employees' knowledge.
· Evaluate and implement technology and automation where they add value.
· Develop measurable standards and KPIs for Accounting Department performance.
· Continuously improve how the department operates.
Organizational Leadership
Quasar uses a structured business operating system based on EOS principles. Previous EOS experience is not required.
We value its underlying goals: clear priorities, measurable performance, accountability, effective meetings, open communication, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
As a Department Head, you will:
· Lead structured weekly Accounting Department meetings.
· Establish and achieve quarterly department goals and improvement initiatives.
· Maintain visibility into department performance and outstanding issues.
· Identify, prioritize, and resolve problems with the Accounting team.
· Ensure decisions become actions and commitments are completed.
· Participate as a member of Quasar's leadership team.
· Collaborate with other Department Heads on company-wide goals and issues.
· Provide accurate financial information, analysis, and insight to support business decisions.
The Leader We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who views leadership as more than supervising employees and reviewing their work.
You:
· Coach and develop people.
· Set clear expectations and create accountability.
· Delegate effectively while remaining accountable for results.
· Build systems and solve root causes rather than repeatedly fixing symptoms.
· Create a stable, collaborative team focused on shared goals.
· Take ownership and follow through on commitments.
· Look for better, more efficient ways to operate.
· Can balance the details of accounting with the bigger picture of the business.
Accounting expertise is important. But accounting expertise alone is not enough.
Qualifications
Required
· Strong practical accounting and financial-management experience.
· Demonstrated experience with general ledger, AR/AP, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
· Experience leading, mentoring, supervising, or developing employees.
· Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
· Demonstrated ability to take ownership of results and improve processes.
· High level of accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
Preferred
· Previous experience as an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or similar role.
· Experience developing accounting policies, procedures, and SOPs.
· Budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and financial-analysis experience.
· KPI, dashboard, or management-reporting experience.
· Accounting systems, automation, or process-improvement experience.
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
· EOS or similar structured operating-system experience is a plus.
What Success Looks Like
· Financial information is accurate, timely, and useful.
· Month-end and year-end closing processes are completed consistently and on schedule.
· Accounting processes and internal controls are documented, understood, and consistently followed.
· The Accounting Department consistently meets its responsibilities and deadlines.
· Problems are identified early, root causes are addressed, and recurring problems decrease.
· Team members understand their responsibilities and take ownership of their work.
· The team works collaboratively toward shared goals.
· Employees continue developing in capability and independence.
· Department performance is visible and measurable.
· Accounting systems and processes become increasingly efficient, reliable, stable, and scalable.
· Accounting provides useful financial visibility and insight to company leadership.
· The Head of Accounting spends appropriate time leading, coaching, planning, and improving the department—not simply doing more accounting than everyone else.
