Senior Network & Systems Engineer
This is not a remote-work position. Onsite presence in or near Salisbury, Maryland is required daily.
Tezla Group is an established Managed Services Provider (MSP) serving businesses throughout the Eastern Shore and Delmarva region. We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Network & Systems Engineer to join our technical team.
This is a senior, hands-on engineering position in an MSP environment. Our engineers work across a wide variety of independent client networks rather than maintaining a single corporate environment. Client environments vary in size, configuration, technology, age, and complexity, and a successful candidate must be comfortable moving between different systems and solving problems in environments they may not have designed or previously encountered.
A typical week may include deploying or replacing a firewall, troubleshooting a VPN or wireless issue, diagnosing a Windows Server problem, configuring network switches, assisting with Microsoft 365, deploying new infrastructure, troubleshooting an unusual connectivity problem, and working directly with clients, vendors, and other Tezla engineers.
Required Experience and Skills
Applicants should have significant real-world professional experience designing, supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining business IT infrastructure.
Candidates must be capable of designing, configuring, testing, and deploying small to medium-sized business networks of up to approximately 200 nodes, including Windows Server and Windows desktop environments.
Strong working knowledge should include:
- TCP/IP networking, subnetting, routing, switching, DNS, and DHCP
- Business-class firewalls, routers, and managed switches
- Wireless network design and troubleshooting
- Site-to-site and remote-access VPN technologies
- Windows Server
- Active Directory and Group Policy
- Microsoft 365 and Exchange administration
- Network and Internet connectivity troubleshooting
- Server and workstation troubleshooting
- Data backup and recovery systems
- Network security concepts and best practices
Candidates should be familiar with business-class networking platforms such as Cisco, Meraki, or comparable technologies. Experience with multiple manufacturers and platforms is highly desirable.
A successful candidate must also have real-world production experience with one or more server or machine virtualization technologies such as Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware, or similar enterprise-class hypervisors.
Troubleshooting and Technical Independence
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills are essential for this position.
Our engineers routinely encounter systems, networks, and configurations that they did not originally design. Candidates must be comfortable methodically investigating unfamiliar environments, identifying root causes, researching unfamiliar technologies when necessary, and developing appropriate solutions when the answer is not immediately apparent.
After an initial orientation and acclimation period, the successful candidate should be capable of independently diagnosing problems, determining appropriate solutions, and completing most assigned engineering work without requiring step-by-step technical guidance.
This position requires someone who can both build new systems correctly and troubleshoot existing systems when they are not working correctly.
MSP and Client-Facing Responsibilities
This is a hands-on engineering position with direct client interaction.
Candidates must be comfortable communicating directly with business owners, managers, vendors, and end users and must be able to explain technical problems, recommendations, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Responsibilities will include:
- Designing, deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting client IP networks
- Installing and configuring firewalls, routers, switches, wireless systems, servers, and related infrastructure
- Troubleshooting Windows servers, workstations, and network-connected systems
- Administering Microsoft 365 and Exchange environments
- Troubleshooting network, wireless, VPN, Internet, server, and email connectivity issues
- Configuring and troubleshooting data backup and recovery systems
- Working with third-party vendors and service providers to resolve client issues
- Traveling onsite to client locations for installations, projects, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Participating in the normal MSP service workflow, including responding to client requests and creating and updating service tickets
- Clearly documenting technical work, configurations, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions
- Communicating effectively with clients and co-workers regarding project and ticket progress
Additional Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following areas is considered beneficial:
- Microsoft 365
- SharePoint
- Exchange and Exchange Online
- Cisco and Meraki networking products
- Advanced firewall configuration and management
- Site-to-site and remote-access VPN technologies
- Network security and segmentation
- Policy development, documentation, and management
- Apple products including MacBooks, iPads, and iPhones
- Backup and disaster recovery technologies
- Multi-site business networks
- Cloud-based infrastructure and services
Experience supporting regulated or compliance-sensitive environments—including HIPAA/HITECH, NIST, FIPS, FedRAMP, FISMA, PCI DSS, or SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley)—is highly desirable but is not required.
Experience Level
We are primarily seeking candidates with 10 or more years of professional IT administration, infrastructure, networking, or engineering experience.
Candidates with fewer years of experience will be considered if the depth and breadth of their real-world production experience demonstrates an equivalent senior-level skill set.
Please do not apply if your IT experience is primarily educational, home/lab based, or limited to entry-level technical support.
This is not a help desk or entry-level IT position. We are looking for an existing IT professional who is already capable of performing systems and network administration and engineering work in production business environments.
Previous MSP experience is highly desirable, although candidates coming from corporate IT environments will be considered if they have the technical breadth and troubleshooting ability required for the position.
