Brooksource is seeking two entry-level Distribution Designers to join our utilities client's growing team in Gahanna, Ohio. With a significant increase in utility projects, this team is expanding to support long-term electrical distribution work across the service territory.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who enjoys both hands-on field work and technical problem solving. Unlike a traditional design role, you'll begin by working alongside experienced field technicians to learn how electrical distribution systems are built in the real world before transitioning into a full-time design position. If you have an engineering mindset, enjoy learning new software, and thrive in a collaborative team environment, please apply!
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Complete structured onboarding by spending up to 3 months in the field alongside experienced data collectors, learning utility equipment, pole attachments, and electrical distribution infrastructure firsthand.
- Collect and document field data that will later be used to develop accurate utility distribution designs.
- Transition into an office-based design role utilizing software such as Catapult and Distribution Design Studio (DDS) to create utility distribution designs.
- Learn how to analyze existing electrical infrastructure and determine the safest and most efficient methods for new pole attachments and distribution upgrades.
- Apply technical problem-solving and mathematical reasoning to support utility design projects while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and safety requirements.
- Collaborate closely with designers, field technicians, supervisors, and teammates throughout the design process.
- Participate in real project work from the beginning while receiving ongoing mentorship and on-the-job training.
Ideal Candidate Background
- Early-career professional interested in utilities, engineering, construction, telecommunications, or infrastructure.
- Technical aptitude demonstrated through vocational training, an associate degree, engineering coursework, military experience, or hands-on field work.
- Experience using design or technical software (CAD or similar engineering/design platforms preferred; AutoCAD experience is a plus but not required).
- Strong mathematical reasoning and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working outdoors during the initial training period before transitioning into an office environment.
- Competitive, self-motivated, and coachable, with experience participating in athletics or other team-based environments being highly valued.
- Enjoys collaborating with others and contributing to team success.
Why You'll Love This Role
- Unique opportunity to gain hands-on field experience before moving into utility design.
- Mentorship and structured training from experienced field technicians and designers.
- Join a stable, growing team supporting one of Ohio's largest utility providers.
- Long-term career growth driven by major infrastructure investments and increasing utility demand.
- Be part of meaningful infrastructure projects that directly support Ohio's expanding electrical grid.
