Full Job Description

Automation Engineer

Location: Columbus, OH
Duration: 12+ Months Contract

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineer to support manufacturing and process automation systems within a GMP-regulated pharmaceutical facility. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems to improve reliability, efficiency, compliance, and overall plant performance. The ideal candidate will have experience with PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and process control systems in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, implement, and maintain automation and control systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
Provide technical support for PLC, HMI, SCADA, DCS, and process control systems.
Lead troubleshooting efforts for automation-related equipment and process issues.
Support commissioning, qualification, and validation activities for new and existing equipment.
Develop and modify PLC logic, HMI screens, and automation software to improve system performance.
Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, Validation, and Quality teams to support production objectives.
Participate in equipment upgrades, capital projects, and automation improvement initiatives.
Generate and review technical documentation, including functional specifications, design documents, SOPs, and validation protocols.
Support change control, deviation investigations, CAPA activities, and regulatory inspections.
Ensure compliance with FDA, cGMP, GAMP 5, and data integrity requirements.
Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions for automation-related issues.
Monitor system performance and identify opportunities for process optimization and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
5+ years of automation engineering experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or regulated manufacturing environments.
Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
Hands-on experience with SCADA, HMI, and DCS platforms.
Strong understanding of GMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
Experience supporting validation and qualification activities (IQ/OQ/PQ).
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and project coordination abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with DeltaV, Emerson, FactoryTalk, Ignition, Wonderware, or Siemens PCS7.
Knowledge of Batch Manufacturing Systems (BMS) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
Familiarity with ISA-88, ISA-95, GAMP 5, and 21 CFR Part 11 requirements.
Experience supporting aseptic processing, filling lines, packaging equipment, or API manufacturing.
PMP, CAPM, or automation-related certifications are a plus.
