Full Job Description

Job Overview

A collision estimator (also known as an auto body estimator or damage appraiser) acts as a primary liaison and project manager throughout the repair journey to include, but not limited to: Writing estimates, conducting process reviews, checking in customer vehicles, completing final customer paperwork prior to vehicle delivery (DRP, final invoice), finalizing total loss administration and providing post repair plan communication including all vehicle status updates to customers.

Vehicle Assessment: The job begins with a thorough inspection of the damaged vehicle to determine the extent of mechanical, body, and structural issues. This often involves visual inspection, possible road tests, and using information provided by the customer about the accident.
Creating the Estimate: Using specialized software like CCC One, Mitchell, or Audatex, the estimator documents all necessary parts replacements and labor costs, producing a detailed repair plan.
Customer Communication: A critical part of the job involves empathetic communication with customers, who are often experiencing a stressful situation after an accident. The estimator explains the repair process, timeline, costs, and addresses any questions they may have.
Insurance Coordination: Estimators work closely with insurance adjusters to ensure compliance with insurance client requirements and Direct Repair Programs (DRPs). This can sometimes involve negotiating discrepancies between initial estimates and the actual needed repairs.
Workflow Management: They play a pivotal role in managing the repair workflow, placing work orders for parts, monitoring the repair status, and performing quality checks on the finished vehicle before its delivery to the customer.

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Collision Estimator, Auto Body Estimator, or Service Advisor to join our fast-paced automotive service team. In this role, you will be the vital link between customers and our repair specialists, providing expert assessments of vehicle damage, estimating repair costs, and guiding clients through the repair process with enthusiasm and professionalism. Your energetic approach will help ensure a seamless customer experience while maximizing shop efficiency and profitability. This position offers an exciting opportunity for individuals with a passion for automotive repair, customer service, and sales to thrive in a collaborative environment dedicated to excellence.

Duties

Conduct thorough inspections of damaged vehicles to accurately assess collision and body repair needs using industry-standard estimating software.
Prepare detailed repair estimates that include parts, labor, and materials, ensuring transparency and clarity for customers.
Communicate effectively with customers, explaining repair procedures, costs, and timelines to foster trust and satisfaction.
Collaborate with technicians and management to prioritize repairs, schedule work efficiently, and ensure timely completion of services.
Upsell additional services such as vehicle maintenance, oil changes, tire services, alignments, suspension repairs, brake repairs, shocks & struts replacement, transmission work, diesel engine repairs, air brake systems, and other automotive diagnostics if needed.
Manage service writing duties by documenting all repair details accurately in the shop management system while maintaining clear communication with customers throughout the process.
Handle cash transactions and process payments securely while providing excellent customer service at every touchpoint.
Stay informed about the latest automotive technologies including mechanical diagnostics, auto body repair techniques, and specialty repairs like wheel alignments or suspension work to better serve clients’ needs.

Experience

Previous dealership experience or automotive service management background is highly preferred.
Proven success in auto estimating or service writing roles within busy collision or auto body shops.
Strong mechanical knowledge with hands-on mechanic experience or familiarity with automotive diagnostics across various systems such as collision repair, Structural damage, engine & transmission damage, and suspension systems.
Experience in upselling automotive services while maintaining excellent customer relations.
Demonstrated ability to handle cash transactions accurately along with excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge of automotive repair processes including auto body repairs and complex diagnostics is a plus.
