The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ Specialized Electives Teacher serves as an instructional leader and mentor during critical developmental and transitional stages for students. This role emphasizes specialized content expertise, hands-on and experiential learning, and developmentally responsive instruction that fosters the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of every student in alignment with Ohio’s Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), OTES 2.0 performance standards, and the District’s mission.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or subject-specific field from an accredited college or university.

Licensure & Certification: Valid, active Ohio Teaching License, Certificate, or Permit for the specific subject area and assigned grade band:

Fine Arts / PE / Health: Multi-Age (PK–12) in Art, Music, Physical Education, or Health.

STEM / Science / Tech / Electives: Primary / Elementary (PK–5 / PK–8), Middle Childhood (4–9 Science, Math, or Tech/Computer Science), Adolescence to Young Adult (7–12 Science/Math), Multi-Age PK–12, or valid Ohio STEM Teaching Permit / Endorsement / Supplemental STEM License.

Background Checks: Ability to pass Federal (FBI) and State (BCI) background checks.

Master’s degree in Education, STEM, Fine Arts, Physical Education, or subject-specific field.

2–3 years of teaching experience in an active, project-based, studio, lab, or outdoor learning environment.

Demonstrated experience with Project-Based Learning (PBL), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and trauma-informed practices.

Proficiency in integrating educational technology, specialized tools, laboratory equipment, or physical/digital production software.

Aligns daily instruction, long-range scope and sequence, and assessments directly with Ohio Learning Standards, National Standards, or NGSS in the designated discipline.

Establishes and executes a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) driven by student performance data and self-reflection in accordance with OTES 2.0 framework cycles.

Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction using district curriculum and specialized instructional resources.

Employs varied research-based strategies, hands-on application, inquiry-based labs, design challenges, and modern technology to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

Communicates learning outcomes clearly, checks for understanding throughout lessons, and adjusts instructional pacing based on real-time student feedback.

Demonstrates an understanding of adolescent development, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles to make content accessible to all students.

Differentiates content, process, and product to accommodate diverse learners, collaborating with intervention specialists to fulfill Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, and English Learner (EL) accommodations.

Connects specialized elective content across disciplines and promotes real-world applications (e.g., career exploration pathways, wellness habits, environmental stewardship, artistic expression).

Establishes and maintains consistent routines and expectations in alignment with building-wide PBIS frameworks across active school settings (labs, studios, gymnasiums, computer rooms, outdoor beds).

Enforces strict safety protocols for hands-on activities, physical movement, equipment use, chemical handling, and digital tools.

Maintains a trauma-informed behavior management system, promoting student self-discipline and restoring positive behavior in alignment with district policy.

Uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment strategies (e.g., rubrics, performance tasks, portfolios, lab reports, code reviews, physical assessments) to measure growth.

Provides timely, actionable feedback to support students' technical, analytical, artistic, or physical development.

Analyzes assessment data to evaluate instructional effectiveness and adjust teaching practices.

Manages subject-specific equipment, hardware, software, inventory, supplies, and safety protocols within allocated budgets.

Coordinates, organizes, and oversees student showcases, exhibitions, science/STEM fairs, coding competitions, concerts, performances, art displays, or fitness events that promote school and community engagement.

Participates actively in Teacher-Based Teams (TBTs), Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), staff development, and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Maintains proactive, regular communication with families regarding academic progress, events, and expectations using district-approved platforms.

Supervises students in instructional and non-instructional settings (hallways, cafeteria, arrival/dismissal) and strictly adheres to the Licensure Code of Professional Conduct for Ohio Educators.
Depending on the specific assignment within the Specialized Electives department, teachers will execute specialized technical duties aligned with their discipline:

STEM / Environmental Sustainability & Urban Gardening: Blend NGSS with agricultural, ecological, and nutrition education; teach ecology, botany, soil health, water conservation, and climate science; manage outdoor learning spaces, raised beds, composting systems, greenhouses, and hydroponic setups; manage planting/harvest schedules and engage community partners.

Adolescent development, Ohio Learning Standards, National Standards, NGSS, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Core technical concepts within the assigned elective discipline (e.g., musical theory, artistic mediums, kinesiology, coding, soil science, media creation).

Relevant safety regulations, digital privacy laws (COPPA/FERPA), and physical/laboratory safety protocols.

Classroom and environment management in active, non-traditional, lab, studio, or outdoor learning environments.
-
Instructional technology integration, data analysis, and differentiated instructional design.
-
Organizational management, budget oversight, hardware/software troubleshooting, and equipment inventory control.
-
Differentiate instruction dynamically for a wide range of learners and build trusting, supportive relationships.

Maintain composure and control in high-energy, active, dynamic, or tech-heavy instructional environments.

Perform physical tasks required by specific disciplines (e.g., lifting equipment, outdoor work, moving instruments/tools).
Physical Demands
Regularly required to speak, hear, sit, stand, and move around the classroom or outdoor space for extended periods. In active disciplines (PE, Music, Art, STEM/Robotics, Gardening), significant physical movement (demonstrating techniques, lifting tools/instruments, assembling hardware, bending/digging) is required. Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry items over 25 to 50 pounds on occasion.
Working Conditions
This is a fast-paced environment with significant mental and emotional demands. Depending on assignment, the employee may experience exposure to outdoor weather conditions, soil/compost, non-hazardous chemicals/lab materials, or loud environments (gymnasiums, music rooms, robotics labs). Professional collaboration and preparation may extend beyond core instructional hours to meet PLC needs.
Driving Requirement
Occasional driving may be required to various school sites, district events, or off-site competitions/showcases.
