Full Job Description

Electrical Commissioning Engineer

Duration: 3–6 Months
Location: Columbus, OH
Pay Rate: $70-$90+
Per Diem: Yes, $211 a day
Length: 3-6 months

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Commissioning Engineer to support the commissioning of electrical power systems on a large-scale industrial/mission-critical project. This position will be responsible for field-level commissioning activities, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination of electrical systems through startup and turnover.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on commissioning experience with power stations, substations, transformers, medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, and associated protection and control equipment.

This is a field-based role requiring approximately 3–6 months of on-site support, with per diem provided.

Key Responsibilities

Perform and oversee commissioning activities for electrical power distribution and generation systems.
Support the startup and commissioning of substations, transformers, switchgear, generators, and power distribution equipment.
Develop, review, and execute electrical commissioning and testing procedures.
Coordinate electrical testing activities with contractors, vendors, engineers, and project management.
Verify electrical installations against drawings, specifications, and approved design documents.
Perform and/or coordinate testing of electrical equipment and systems, including transformers, medium- and high-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, bus systems, generators, motor control equipment, grounding systems, power distribution systems
Assist with relay testing, protection and control verification, and functional testing.
Review test results and identify deficiencies, equipment issues, or installation problems.
Troubleshoot electrical systems during startup and commissioning.
Track commissioning issues, punch-list items, and system deficiencies through resolution.
Review electrical drawings, one-lines, schematics, equipment documentation, and test reports.
Coordinate energization activities and ensure proper sequencing of commissioning activities.
Maintain accurate commissioning records and turnover documentation.
Participate in daily coordination meetings and provide status updates to project leadership.
Support system turnover from construction through commissioning and final acceptance.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
3+ years of electrical engineering, testing, commissioning, or field engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience commissioning power generation, substations, transformers, or large-scale electrical distribution systems.
Strong understanding of electrical power systems and electrical safety.
Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment drawings.
Experience with electrical testing and commissioning procedures.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently in a field environment and coordinate with multiple project stakeholders.
Willingness to travel and work on-site for the duration of the project.

Preferred Experience

Experience with power stations or power generation facilities.
Substation commissioning experience.
Transformer testing and commissioning experience.
Medium- or high-voltage electrical commissioning experience.
Experience with protective relays and electrical protection systems.
Experience with switchgear and circuit breaker testing.
Familiarity with electrical testing equipment and commissioning software.
Experience working with electrical contractors, equipment manufacturers, and testing firms.
Experience supporting large industrial, energy, semiconductor, or mission-critical/data center projects.

Ideal Candidate Background

Candidates with backgrounds such as Electrical Commissioning Engineer, Electrical Field Engineer, Substation Engineer, Electrical Testing Engineer, Power Systems Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, or Electrical Startup Engineer would be a strong fit.

The strongest candidates will have spent significant time in the field commissioning substations, transformers, power generation equipment, and medium/high-voltage distribution systems, rather than solely performing design engineering.
