Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and empathetic graduate student to serve as an Academic Coach and Tutor for a client who is a former business major managing the academic and daily life impacts of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The client sustained a brain tumor diagnosis during his college studies and continues to experience challenges related to fatigue, executive functioning, and memory. He is currently enrolled in a self-paced college course and needs consistent, knowledgeable support to succeed.
This is a tutoring and coaching role—not a clinical position—but the ideal candidate will bring graduate-level training in neuropsychology, rehabilitation science, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or a closely related field. An understanding of TBI and neurorehabilitation principles is essential to supporting this client effectively.
Client Background & Candidate Profile
Our client is a former college business major who was diagnosed with a brain tumor during his studies. As a result of his diagnosis and treatment, he experiences challenges with energy and fatigue management, executive functioning (including planning, organization, and task initiation), and memory encoding and retrieval. He is a motivated learner currently working through a self-paced college course and may pursue additional coursework over time.
We are specifically seeking a current graduate student in neurorehabilitation, neuropsychology, neurology, or a closely related discipline. The right candidate will have a strong working knowledge of neurorehabilitation best practices—including evidence-based compensatory strategies, cognitive rehabilitation frameworks, and fatigue management approaches—and will be current on the latest research in the field. This is not a clinical role, but a deep understanding of how TBI affects cognition and daily functioning is essential to supporting this client in a meaningful and effective way.
Roles & Responsibilities
Academic Tutoring
- Assist the client in understanding and mastering course content (business-related curriculum)
- Break down complex material into manageable steps suited to his cognitive profile
- Use repetition, multi-modal learning, and spaced retrieval techniques to support memory retention
- Help review and summarize readings, lectures, and assignments
Executive Functioning Coaching
- Help the client organize tasks, set priorities, and create structured study plans
- Provide scaffolding for assignment planning, deadline management, and pacing within a self-paced format
- Use evidence-based strategies such as external cueing, checklists, and goal-setting frameworks
- Support task initiation and sustained attention through structured session routines
Energy & Fatigue Management
- Be attentive to client’s cognitive and physical fatigue during sessions
- Adjust session length, pacing, and demand based on the client’s day-to-day capacity
- Incorporate restorative breaks and low-demand activities as needed
Communication & Coordination
- Maintain brief session notes and share updates with the care coordinator as requested
- Communicate proactively about client progress, challenges, and emerging needs
- Respect confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries at all times
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Required
- Current graduate student in neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field
- Demonstrated knowledge of Traumatic Brain Injury: its cognitive, behavioral, and fatigue-related sequelae
- Familiarity with evidence-based neurorehabilitation strategies (e.g., compensatory cognitive strategies, Goal Management Training, errorless learning)
- Strong interpersonal skills: patient, flexible, and able to adapt communication style
- Ability to work independently and maintain reliable, consistent scheduling
Preferred
- Clinical or research experience working with individuals with acquired brain injuries
- Familiarity with current literature on cognitive rehabilitation and TBI academic reintegration
- Experience in tutoring, coaching, or academic support roles
- Background or coursework in business, economics, or related subject matter
