Position Overview
We are actively hiring for Fire Protection Designer I, Fire Protection Designer II, and Fire Protection Designer III in Columbus, Ohio.
The Fire Protection Designer is responsible for designing and developing fire protection systems and producing design drawings and calculations for permitting and construction. This position supports project managers, field teams, and other stakeholders by delivering accurate, constructible, and cost-effective designs while maintaining professional relationships both internally and externally.
Core Responsibilities (All Levels)
- Design fire protection systems utilizing architect-generated dimensions and structural backgrounds
- Identify and resolve coordination issues and communicate outstanding concerns
- Perform hydraulic calculations as required
- Complete stock listings for fabrication as required
- Review design drawings in detail prior to fabrication
- Create design drawing schedules in conjunction with project managers for permit and fabrication schedules
- Review design documents prior to permit and architect/engineer submittals
- Attend project meetings and jobsite visits as needed
- Document and communicate discrepancies, unclear intent, or missing information affecting design or coordination
- Communicate with field foremen throughout the design process and document required changes resulting from coordination
- Review submittals for size, quantity, and design to ensure compliance with engineer requirements, available space constraints, and compatibility with equipment from other vendors
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Fire Protection Designer I
Experience & Qualifications
- Fire protection design experience in fire protection systems
- NICET III/State certification required
Role Focus
- Support fire protection design efforts and coordination activities
- Produce fire protection design drawings and calculations for permitting and construction
- Develop internal and external relationships in a professional manner
Fire Protection Designer II
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of fire protection design experience
- NICET II/State certification required
- OSHA 10 certification required
Role Focus
- Mid-level design role supporting commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects
- Prepare detailed layouts and hydraulic calculations
- Produce accurate, constructible, and cost-effective designs
- Work under the direction of senior designers or engineers while supporting project managers and field teams
Fire Protection Designer III
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of fire protection design experience
- NICET III/State certification required
- OSHA 10 certification required
Role Focus
- Lead complex fire protection design efforts with a high degree of autonomy
- Independently produce fire protection design drawings and calculations for permitting and construction
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships internally and externally
Job Skills (for all levels)
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications
- AutoCAD experience and third-party software training
- HydraCAD software experience
- BIM (Navisworks) experience
- Revit experience
- General knowledge of NFPA codes
- Competent mathematical ability
- Good computer skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- CAD coursework or training preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb on and off equipment and ladders
- Ability to walk jobsites
Special Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License required
Pay: $60,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
