Security Engineer, Bot Intelligence & Traffic Analysis
About the Role
We are seeking a Security Engineer, Bot Intelligence & Traffic Analysis to join our Content Delivery & Engineering Tooling team. This role is focused on understanding, analyzing, and improving how automated traffic interacts with large-scale web and eCommerce platforms.
As a key member of the team, you'll serve as the central analyst for bot-related activity, leveraging observability and monitoring tools to identify traffic patterns, quantify business impact, and provide actionable insights that support mitigation strategies. Your work will directly contribute to improving site performance, protecting customer experience, and strengthening bot management capabilities through data-driven analysis, tooling, and process development.
You'll collaborate closely with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Security, Product, Analytics, and Engineering teams to provide visibility into traffic behavior and support critical decision-making related to bot management.
What You'll Do
- Monitor and analyze web traffic to identify bot activity patterns using tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, FullStory, and related observability platforms
- Evaluate traffic characteristics including request rates, session behavior, geographic trends, HTTP headers, and user interactions to distinguish legitimate traffic from automated activity
- Investigate traffic anomalies and performance issues potentially linked to bot behavior and summarize findings for technical stakeholders
- Deliver actionable recommendations that enable senior engineers to make informed mitigation decisions
- Design and maintain dashboards, alerts, queries, and reporting mechanisms to improve visibility into traffic trends and site impact
- Partner with engineering teams to document bot detection methodologies, mitigation processes, playbooks, and decision frameworks
- Support optimization efforts within CDN technologies, including Fastly, by providing traffic intelligence and analytical insights
- Perform ad hoc investigations related to site performance degradation, traffic spikes, and security events
- Collaborate cross-functionally with SRE, Information Security, Product, and Analytics teams to align on metrics, definitions, and priorities
- Produce recurring reports measuring bot traffic volume, site performance impact, customer experience implications, and business outcomes
- Explore opportunities to leverage AI and automation to improve traffic analysis and operational workflows
- Contribute to internal tooling, scripts, AI assistants, and automation initiatives that improve analysis, reporting, and alerting capabilities
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for tools, queries, workflows, and operational processes
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in web analytics, observability, site reliability, cybersecurity, traffic analysis, or related technical disciplines
- Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, FullStory, Datadog, New Relic, or similar tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies within large datasets
- Experience building dashboards, alerts, queries, and operational reporting solutions
- Solid understanding of web technologies including HTTP requests, headers, sessions, caching, load balancing, and CDN behavior
- Familiarity with Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), preferably Fastly
- Experience working with Git-based repositories (GitLab preferred)
- Basic scripting and query language experience
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience creating technical documentation, operational procedures, and process guides
- Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and security teams
- Self-starter mindset with strong investigative and troubleshooting capabilities
- Interest in AI, automation, and emerging technologies
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with bot management, fraud detection, account protection, or traffic intelligence initiatives
- Experience working with Varnish Configuration Language (VCL)
- Exposure to Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), traffic filtering, and CDN rule management
- Familiarity with CI/CD technologies including GitLab and Terraform
- Experience supporting AI, machine learning, or automation projects
- Knowledge of eCommerce platforms, digital customer experiences, and online performance metrics
Why Join Us?
This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of security, observability, performance engineering, and AI-driven automation while helping protect large-scale digital platforms. You'll gain exposure to advanced monitoring technologies, traffic intelligence, CDN optimization, bot management strategies, and emerging AI-powered operational tooling while partnering with highly skilled engineering and security teams.
