The Opportunity

Lean Tree is supporting a leading North American retailer with a rapid executive assessment of its Digital Operating Model, with particular emphasis on Front-End Engineering, storefront quality and engineering maturity.

We're looking for an experienced Front-End Engineering Lead, based in the US, to join a small senior assessment team for an initial 5½-week engagement beginning in late August.

The engagement offers the opportunity to influence the future direction of a major retail organisation ahead of significant technology investment. Subject to the outcome of the assessment, there is a strong expectation that the work will progress into targeted Phase 2 deep dives during Q4, followed by a broader transformation programme from 2027 onwards.

Role Purpose:

You will lead the assessment of the client's Front-End Engineering capability, including:

Front-End Engineering organisation and capability
Storefront architecture and engineering practices
Code quality, maintainability and technical debt
Engineering standards and technical governance
Quality Engineering and release confidence
Collaboration across Product, Design and Engineering

Working alongside a small team of senior consultants, you will combine deep technical expertise with strong consulting skills, engaging senior stakeholders and translating technical findings into clear executive recommendations.

We're looking for someone with:

Extensive experience leading Front-End Engineering teams within large retail, eCommerce or consumer organisations
Strong understanding of modern front-end architectures and storefront technologies
Experience assessing engineering capability, technical quality and engineering maturity
Excellent executive communication and stakeholder engagement skills
A collaborative consulting style and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Consultancy experience would be advantageous

Location:

Hybrid, with the majority of time spent on-site at the client's location in Columbus, Ohio.
