Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Transplant PCU / Stepdown | Nights | 13-Week Contract
Location: Columbus, OH
Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (7:00pm - 07:30am)
Contract: 13 weeks with extension provided
Pay: $60/hr

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Travel Registered Nurse (RN) with strong Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Stepdown experience to join a specialized Transplant Progressive Care Unit. This role focuses on providing high-quality nursing care to adult patients recovering from kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants, as well as patients with renal disease, hepatology disorders, gastrointestinal conditions, and transplant-related complications.

This is an excellent opportunity for nurses who enjoy caring for medically complex patients in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. ICU experience is not required for this position; however, candidates must possess strong PCU/Stepdown clinical skills.

Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care

Deliver comprehensive nursing care to adult transplant patients in a Progressive Care Unit.
Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
Monitor patients recovering from kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant procedures.
Assess and monitor transplant recipients for signs of organ rejection.
Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition.
Administer medications safely according to physician orders.
Evaluate patient outcomes and modify nursing interventions as appropriate.
Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical documentation.

Progressive Care Nursing Responsibilities

Manage patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.
Monitor telemetry and recognize cardiac dysrhythmias.
Perform rhythm interpretation and initiate appropriate interventions.
Monitor hemodynamic stability.
Care for patients requiring frequent nursing assessments.
Coordinate multidisciplinary care plans.
Provide patient and family education throughout hospitalization.

Transplant Nursing Responsibilities

Provide care for patients with:

Kidney Transplants
Liver Transplants
Pancreas Transplants
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Renal Failure
Hepatology Disorders
Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Uncontrolled Diabetes
Suspected Organ Rejection
Post-Operative Transplant Recovery
Transplant-Related Infections

IV Therapy & Vascular Access

Start peripheral IVs.
Maintain IV therapy.
Manage central venous catheters.
Care for PICC lines.
Access and manage implanted ports.
Administer blood products.
Monitor vascular access devices for complications.

Renal & Gastrointestinal Care

Monitor renal transplant patients.
Perform Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI).
Assist with pre- and post-hemodialysis management.
Care for patients with renal failure.
Manage feeding tubes.
Support liver and pancreas transplant recovery.
Monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.

Endocrine & Metabolic Care

Manage IV insulin protocols.
Titrate insulin drips as ordered.
Monitor blood glucose trends.
Recognize endocrine complications.

Respiratory Care

Administer oxygen via nasal cannula.
Monitor respiratory status.
Provide non-invasive airway support.
Identify respiratory deterioration.

Documentation & Communication

Document all patient assessments accurately using Epic.
Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
Participate in bedside shift reports.
Coordinate discharge planning.
Communicate changes in patient status promptly.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies and quality standards.

Required Qualifications

Active RN License (Compact or State License)
Minimum 2 years of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Stepdown nursing experience
Strong Stepdown experience required
ICU experience not required
Experience caring for medically complex adult patients
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Excellent assessment and critical thinking skills
