Overview:

Job Description Summary:

Assists with some functions performed by the anatomic pathologists. Performs autopsies, photography, and grossing of surgical specimens under the supervision of a pathologist. Monitors progress of tissue studies for autopsy cases and arranges tissue storage and organization.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

Provides gross descriptions for all specimens, assessing biopsies for adequacy, macrophotography, selecting appropriate tissues for special studies, autopsy prosection and proper restoration of body for release to funeral director.
Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required. Assists with procedure and technical development and acts as a resource.
Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulations related to position.
Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated by lab area. Responsible for detailed cleaning of autopsy area and equipment after use. Reports spills and hazardous situations immediately and acts appropriately.
Follows established guidelines for disclosure of patient information.
Performs routine and complex technical procedures and functions in the laboratory information system in an adequate and timely manner. Performs preventive maintenance and quality control with appropriate documentation and communication.
Presents continuing education. Participates in special projects and presentation of results.

Education Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in biological or allied health sciences from an accredited institution, required.
Master’s, or Ph.D., in biological or allied health sciences from an accredited institution, preferred.

Certifications:

Certification (or certification eligible) as a Pathologist’s Assistant (ASCP or AAPA), required.

Skills:

Effective interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities. High degree of motor control and good hand/eye coordination working with specimens.
Ability to work independently under minimal supervision; teach and supervise the work of others and maintain confidentiality of information.
Demonstrated pathology skills and extensive knowledge of anatomy and dissection procedures for surgical, autopsy, and perinatal specimens.

Experience:

Three years anatomical pathology experience, required.

Physical Requirements:

Occasionally : Bend/twist, Squat/kneel, Climb stairs/ladder, Reaching above shoulder, Lifting/carrying 11-20 lbs, Lifting/carrying 21-40 lbs, Pushing/pulling 0-25 lbs, Loud noises

Frequently: Walking, Interpreting data, Fume/Gases/Vapors, Machinery

Continuously: Standing, Sitting, Flexing/extending of neck, Hand use: grasping, gripping, turning, Repetitive hand/arm use, Computer skills, Lifting/carrying 0-10 lbs, Audible speech, Hearing acuity, Depth perception, Color vision, Peripheral vision, Seeing - Far/near, Problem solving, Decision making, Blood and/or Bodily fluids, Communicable disease and/or Pathogens, Chemicals/Medications, Biohazard waste
