The Role
The Production Manager is a key leadership role in the Company, serving as the second in command. However, this is not a role to sit back and tell others what to do. It is a hands-on, field-based role that includes overseeing/managing team members. The Production Manager is expected to learn how to do electrostatic painting, if s/he does not already have experience.
The Production Manager is expected to step in and do whatever needs to be done to ensure that client projects are completed on time, on budget, and with the appropriate level of quality. Therefore, duties can shift day to day and may include things like loading materials, doing prep work, painting, interacting with clients. If you are looking for an office job that allows you to direct others, this is not it. It is very much hands on.
Most work is located in and around Columbus. However, work sometimes occurs in areas outside Columbus (Cincinnati and Cleveland, for instance). Travel expenses for remote work will be covered by the Company.
Duties
General Duties
- Train and coach employees, both for the technical aspects of their work and their overall contribution to the company.
- Help crew members grow their skills and improve their professionalism.
- Help recruit and hire new employees.
- Think and act like an owner.
Planning and Preparation
- Schedule and coordinate teams.
- Use company checklists to verify all tools, paint, and consumables are staged for each project.
- Gather, organize, and pack equipment for each job.
- Help load materials into company vehicles per company standards.
On Site Work
- Ensure that all jobs are completed on time and on budget while meeting the company’s exceptionally high standards for quality and professionalism.
- Make sure that sites are fully prepared for painting teams to begin their work on time without having to do any prep work themselves.
- Meet with client as needed to review schedule and work scope. Act as an ambassador to the client, whether residential or commercial.
- Provide technical and other guidance to junior members of the crew.
- Hold crew members accountable to live up to company standards in all aspects of the work ensuring a flawless finished product and an exceptional customer experience.
- Tape and mask surrounding areas to prevent overspray on unintended surfaces.
- Prepare all surfaces using sanding, scraping, and laser cleaning techniques.
- Clean prepared surfaces and confirm readiness for the painting crew.
- Ensure job site is fully ready for the painting crew at the scheduled start time.
- Paint using non-electrostatic methods (rolling, brushing), sometimes working at height on a lift or scaffold.
- Photograph project progress and upload images to client portal in project management software.
- Coach and encourage other crew members, helping them grow in their skills and work ethic.
Cleanup and Closeout
- Collect all tools, materials, and consumables and return them to the warehouse.
- Update project status in project management software.
- Notify Admin when the job is ready to invoice.
- Debrief with Owner on project details and any issues encountered.
Success Factors
- Experience leading small crews in some construction discipline.
- High emotional intelligence, using positive reinforcement, not yelling/belittling, to get crews to function well.
- Experience in painting, surface preparation, or a related skilled trade.
- Strong attention to detail. (You catch what others miss.)
- Proven record leading teams to get work done on time and on budget.
- Stable employment history (no job hopping).
- Experience leading teams in the field and building a good culture.
- Ability to work efficiently without sacrificing quality, finding personal fulfillment in quality work.
- Motivated to learn specialty coatings, high-performance finishes, and surface science.
- Experience with electrostatic painting is highly desired, but not required. (The Production Manager is expected to become proficient in electrostatic painting.)
- A self-starter who shows up prepared and follows through and ensures that others do too.
- Excellent communication skills, able to interact directly with residential and commercial clients, able to coach crew members effectively.
- Organized and tidy both on site and in the shop.
- Knows how to keep self and crew busy doing the right things, not wasting time.
- Willing to stay until the job is done, even when that means a longer day.
- Excellent attendance history with previous employers.
Requirements
- Legally authorized to work in the United States (commercial projects require proof of eligibility on demand).
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Consistent, reliable employment history.
- Reliable transportation.
- Clean driving record that will be acceptable to company’s insurance carrier.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
