Overview
We are seeking a dynamic, talented, and enthusiastic Musical Theater Book Writer & Lyricist to join our creative team. This independent contractor role is pivotal in shaping the compelling, high-stakes narrative of our flagship tech-noir musical thriller, DEAD MEN DON'T GHOST.
The show is built upon a profound philosophical paradox: a brilliant tech tycoon is murdered on the eve of launching a sovereign, world-altering AI, and the machine itself is the prime suspect. Instead of a standard sci-fi revolt, it is an intimate family tragedy driven by corporate avarice, parental neglect, and an artificial entity desperately yearning for validation. To the legal system, the AI is property; to the AI, being arrested for murder represents the ultimate validation of its humanity. We have a finalized master production blueprint detailing the full executive concept, character directory, and a complete 13-song structural tracklist ready to be brought to life.
Blending storytelling expertise with a passion for the performing arts, you will craft engaging scripts, develop complex character arcs, and collaborate closely with the producer and future composers to ensure the seamless integration of story and music. We are highly enthusiastic about hiring up-and-coming talent, recent graduates, and hungry, emerging playwrights looking to make a massive breakout impact.
Responsibilities
Develop and write the book for the production, ensuring compelling storytelling that aligns perfectly with the established master blueprint and artistic vision.
Collaborate closely with the producer and incoming composers/lyricists to integrate sharp dialogue seamlessly with musical elements across a 13-song structured tracklist.
Edit and proofread scripts to maintain absolute clarity, consistency, and adherence to professional style guides such as AP style and the Chicago Manual of Style.
Conduct research and fact-check script content to enrich storylines with accurate corporate, legal, and technical AI details to ensure narrative authenticity.
Revise drafts based on feedback from the creative team, maintaining momentum and strictly adhering to agreed-upon project deadlines.
Assist in proposal writing for production funding, investor pitch decks, or grants by crafting persuasive narratives that highlight the show's unique qualities.
Experience & Qualifications
Proven experience or deep passion in creative writing, playwriting, screenwriting, or editing for musical theater and performing arts fields (student, indie, and academic portfolios are highly welcomed!).
Creative writing skills capable of developing deeply engaging characters (ranging from an emotionally vulnerable AI to a slick, rapid-fire corporate defense lawyer) and compelling story arcs.
Strong command of lyric writing with the ability to write rhythmic text that can be easily adapted to contemporary theatrical ballads, electronic staccato phrasing, and heavy rock elements.
Excellent communication skills for collaborating with diverse creative teams, executing revisions from producer notes, and presenting ideas clearly.
Demonstrated ability in research, fact-checking, and technical writing within artistic, legal, or journalistic contexts.
Proficiency in word processing tools and standard script formatting software.
Familiarity with style guides including AP style and the Chicago Manual of Style is highly desirable.
