Full Job Description

Job Title: Managing Editor Status: FT/Exempt

Reports To: Executive Editor Department: Editorial

Supervisory Responsibility: Yes

POSITION SUMMARY

The Managing Editor oversees publication operation, including planning, assigning and scheduling coverage of news and features for print and digital dissemination. This position will supervise reporters, freelance writers and other staff to ensure The Lakeville Journal or The Millerton News’ coverage area is well-served and to keep publication on schedule. This position works collaboratively with other writers and editors. In addition to planning, assigning and scheduling, the Managing Editor is expected to regularly write articles and provide multimedia, as needed.

The position is also responsible for identifying news and feature stories that span the realm of town government, education, health care, social services, environmental coverage, sports, community, and breaking news. It also includes routine follow-up on stories.

The Managing Editor is expected to foster and maintain relationships with members of the community for the purpose of developing relevant story coverage and strengthening community ties.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Attend editorial planning meetings, production meetings and training sessions.

· Collaborate in planning coverage for all publications, including supplements.

· Oversee proofreading procedures and edit copy

· Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone

· Proofread for errors in content, spelling/grammar and AP style

· Write stories and provide multimedia for print, web, and social media

· Collaborate on print and digital production

· Receive, validate and process correspondent invoices and contracts

· Resolve issues as they arise

· Attend events on behalf of the organization

· Coordinate, with other editors, interns during the summer program

· Sustain high ethical standards and meet deadlines

· Comply with all company policies and safety rules

· Perform other duties as necessary.

EDUCATION & SKILLS

· Strong journalistic knowledge and computer proficiency is mandatory.

· Minimum of two years editorial related experience preferred.

· Ability to write using correct spelling and meaning of words, composition rules and grammar using the Associated Press style. Must be able to type and communicate effectively.

· Or, possess an equivalent amount of training and experience to perform the job.

· Driver’s license and flexibility to be called upon throughout the week to respond to coverage needs is required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $52,000.00 per year
