Payroll Technician II
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Fiscal Services, perform a variety of technical accounting duties in the preparation and maintenance of an assigned payroll(s); audit and reconcile STRS, PERS and payroll reports; provide support to districts regarding proper coding and reporting for payroll and retirement purposes; assure employees are paid in an accurate manner.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: May include, but are not limited to the following: (E) = Essential Duties
- Perform a variety of technical accounting duties in the organization, specifically preparation, audit, maintain and reconcile process of an assigned payroll(s) for regular and substitute certificated and classified employees. (E)
- Audit, reconcile and submit STRS and PERS monthly retirement reports, resolve problems and discrepancies related to retirement, including exception reports; (E)
- Review and process time sheets and records; verify proper authorizing signatures, coding and accuracy for payroll adjustments. (E)
- Input time sheet information including deductions into an assigned computer system; review information for accuracy and make corrections as necessary. (E)
- Input employee garnishments, contributions and deductions; establish and maintain detailed automated and manual employee records regarding payroll transactions, leave allotments and absences, benefits, salaries, tax status and related information from a variety of payroll-related forms. (E)
- Assist in auditing and processing annual W-2 reports.
- Assure employees are paid in a timely manner. (E)
- Communicate with County Office and district personnel, employees and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to payroll discrepancies. (E)
- Set up new employees; set up job title codes, benefits, pay cycle, salary schedule and other payroll related information into appropriate computer system; assure compliance with procedures related to the proper recording and processing of terminated employees. (E)
- Process retroactive pay as needed; prepare and maintain related records.
- Process special payroll transactions such as new or terminated employee pay or corrections as assigned.
- Print, sort and distribute payroll reports and warrants. (E)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma required. Twop or more years of increasingly responsible payroll accounting experience, preferably in public schools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this position will be required to work indoors in a standard office environment and come in direct contact with CCOE and district employees, and the public.
LICENSE REQUIRED
A valid appropriate California driver's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Seeing to read and verify a variety of numerical data and materials;
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information;
- Speaking so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone;
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other equipment;
- Sitting for extended periods of time;
- Sitting, standing, walking, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending over at the waist, grasping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and moving, lifting and/or carrying 0-25ounds to waist height.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license;
- Paid on the County Classified Employees Unit Salary Schedule.

DEFINITION
