Full Job Description

Title Abstractor

Steptoe & Johnson PLLC is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Abstractor to support our title and legal services team. In this role, you will conduct title research, review public records, analyze ownership interests, and help ensure the accuracy and completeness of title abstracts for a variety of projects.

What You'll Do

Perform deed and title searches using county databases, public records, and online resources.
Review and analyze documents to determine their impact on property title.
Calculate ownership interests for surface, mineral, royalty, and leasehold estates.
Utilize mapping and platting software to analyze and compare property records.
Collaborate with abstractors, attorneys, and internal teams to obtain supplemental information and ensure accurate work products.
Maintain clear communication with project teams and stakeholders.
Adhere to established title standards and confidentiality requirements.
Assist with special projects, legal research, and occasional travel as needed.
Manage administrative responsibilities, including timekeeping and expense reporting.

What We're Looking For

Associate degree or higher required
Equivalent combination of education and prior abstracting experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn new software applications.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous title abstracting experience is preferred but not required.
Knowledge of title research and the abstracting process is a plus.
Experience working with maps, plats, land records, or property research is beneficial.

Location/Training Requirements

This position will require up to six months of in-office training at either our Morgantown or Wheeling location, depending on which office is most practical for the selected candidate(s). Upon successful completion of training, the position will transition to a remote work agreement. Candidates are responsible for all travel and commuting expenses associated with the in-office training period.
