Substance Use Disorder Technician

Hourly Rate Range: $20 - $22

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Encompass Community Supports, formerly known as Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services (RRCS) is hiring a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Technician. Encompass Community Supports is a Virginia State community services organization that improves the quality of life in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties by providing comprehensive mental health, substance use, developmental disability, housing, children’s, and aging services. At Encompass Community Supports, our full-time employees work 37.5 hours weekly.

Our SUD Tech performs routine and responsible work providing support to clinical and professional staff in the areas of client supervision, screening, evaluation, treatment, and facility operations within a substance use disorder treatment setting. Ensures client safety and program integrity through direct care, observation, documentation, and adherence to established policies and procedures. Work is performed under immediate to general supervision of program management staff.

The hourly rate for our SUD-Tech position starts at $20 and may increase up to $22 depending on previous SUD-Tech work experience.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides direct supervision and support to clients individually and in groups to ensure safety, structure, and adherence to program rules.
Engages clients using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally responsive approaches.
Observes and reports changes in clients’ behavior, mood, or physical condition to clinical staff promptly.
Conducts drug and alcohol screenings, room checks, and safety rounds according to policy.
Monitors clients’ vital signs and administers prescribed medications as directed and trained.
Responds appropriately to medical and behavioral emergencies following established protocols.
Ensures the physical security of the facility and the safety of clients and staff.
Accurately documents client observations, interventions, and incidents in electronic health records (EHR) or logs in a timely manner.
Completes required reports (shift logs, incident reports, medication logs, etc.) consistent with program and regulatory standards.
Maintains confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
Assists with facility upkeep, including cleaning of common areas and client rooms as needed.
Transports clients safely to appointments, meetings, and other approved destinations.
Picks up and distributes supplies, meals, or laundry as assigned.
When assigned to Detox: Monitors withdrawal symptoms, completes nursing or technician assessments, supports medication administration per protocol, and ensures medical supplies are adequately stocked.
When assigned to Admissions: Coordinates the intake process, completes admission documentation, orients clients to the facility, and communicates with referral sources.
Participates in ongoing training and supervision to maintain competency in crisis intervention, CPR/First Aid, medication administration, and infection control.
Upholds professional boundaries and ethical standards consistent with organizational policy.
Work Availability: Must be able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure continuous 24-hour program coverage and client care.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Provides or assists in delivering educational groups, recovery lectures, and life skills sessions to support clients’ treatment goals.
Answers incoming phone calls, routes messages appropriately, and provides general information in a professional manner.
May facilitate groups or activities in the absence of clinical staff, following established curricula or guidance from supervisors.
Monitors and reports facility maintenance needs to ensure a safe, clean, and orderly environment.
Prepares and serves meals when food service staff are unavailable, maintaining sanitary practices in compliance with health standards.
Performs other duties as assigned to support program operations and ensure quality client care.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, and trauma-informed care practices.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and demonstrate empathy, respect, and nonjudgmental communication.
Strong observational and documentation skills, with attention to accuracy and timeliness.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in crisis situations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED required;
Associate degree or higher in behavioral health, psychology, social work, or a related field preferred.
At least one (1) year of experience working in a substance use disorder, behavioral health, residential, or medical setting preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry up to 25 pounds frequently during a shift.
Must be able to remain alert and responsive for the duration of assigned shifts, including overnights.
May be exposed to varying environmental conditions and occasional contact with individuals in distress

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid VA driver's license.
Must hold or obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
Completion of Crisis Prevention/Intervention (CPI), de-escalation, or similar training preferred or required within the first 90 days.
May require Medication Technician certification or equivalent state-approved training if administering medications.
Must maintain a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and current auto insurance if transporting clients.
Must be able to work rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and overnights, as scheduled.
Must pass all required background checks, health screenings, and drug testing in accordance with organizational policy and regulatory standards
Employment with Encompass Community Supports is contingent upon the successful completion of our background check process (criminal, DMV, education, drug screening, reference check, DSS, OIG and SAM).
