Application Instructions for Full-time Emergency Medical Services Technician Position

Madison County is accepting applications for the position of Full-time Emergency Medical
Services Technician position. Information on Madison County, the position and the
application procedures can be found at https://www.madisonco.virginia.gov/. Applications

Following is supplementary information on the position and application instructions for all
interested individuals:

Full-time employees are eligible for VRS Retirement, employee health insurance (currently
Local Choice-Blue Cross/Blue Shield) benefits, and holiday and vacation/sick paid time off.
The current Madison County Personnel Policy is available on the County website. Part-time
positions are not eligible for these benefits. The hiring rate will depend upon the
qualifications of the individual selected but is anticipated to be:

Emergency Medical Technician Basic - $49,447.00 - $60,871.00/yr. range
Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced - $51,920.00 - $63,914.00/yr. range
Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - $57,242.00 - $70,465.00/yr. range

Emergency Medical Technician -
Advanced

General Definition of Work:
Performs regular intermediate and occasional difficult skilled human support work rescuing and
transporting the sick and the injured and administering emergency medical care at the EMT-
Advanced level, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision
of the EMS Lieutenant.

Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or
ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with
disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Functions:
• Responds to emergency calls; drives equipment; transports victims to emergency care facilities;

serves as ambulance crew leader and oversees the services provided by subordinates.

Observes patient responses and maintains accurate and complete records; completes reports on

basic and advanced life support calls.

Performs emergency medical care in accordance with established written guidelines and verbal

instructions from physicians; implements treatment plans in route to medical services based on
patient's history, signs, and systems displayed.

Responds to cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, neurological, toxicological, and traumatic

calls or other conditions which might require advanced life support.

Identifies and requests necessary resources through appropriate chain of command such as

equipment, fire department, law enforcement, air medical, etc.

Assists with the rescue of accident victims utilizing specialized equipment.
Transports patients to hospitals.
Performs general maintenance work and upkeep on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station, and

grounds.

Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical

material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes; assists in training new and subordinate
emergency medical service providers.

Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care facility.
Participates in Community Risk Reduction and Community Outreach activities.
Maintains physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and

heavy lifting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology; thorough knowledge of the principles
and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation; thorough
knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of
accidents; thorough knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the County; skill in
assessing a victim's condition and applying appropriate emergency medical care; ability to understand
and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with associates, medical staff, patients and their families,
emergency and public safety representatives, and the general public.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the provision of emergency medical
services, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25
pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking
or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching
or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling, frequently
requires walking and sitting and occasionally requires standing and repetitive motions; work requires
close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision
and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of
the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or
quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive
detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work
requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects
and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length,
operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and
activities; work regularly requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather
conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal
protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk
of electrical shock and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-
weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to
extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) ; work is generally in a loud noise
location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements:
• All employees may be expected to work hours more than their normally scheduled hours in

response to short-term department needs and/or County-wide emergencies.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing and criminal

background checks. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or
discipline, up to and including, termination.

Future Requirements
• Must be released by Department Operational Medical Director within 6 months of hire.

Obtain Emergency Vehicle Operators Certification Class 3 within 6 months of hire.

Obtain Vehicle Extrication within 12 months of hire.

Desired Certifications
• Pro Board Firefighter I and II
