About Pessoa Construction
Pessoa Construction Company is a trusted leader in heavy highway and site development projects across the Mid-Atlantic region. We are built on a foundation of integrity, accountability, commitment and hard work—and we invest in our people to grow with us.
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled, safety-focused CDL Class A Truck Driver to transport heavy construction equipment and materials supporting our heavy civil and underground utility projects. This role operates tractor-trailers with lowboy, flatbed, and other specialized trailers to mobilize excavators, loaders, compactors, and related equipment between yards and job sites, and also operates dump trucks to haul aggregates, spoils, asphalt, and other materials. The ideal candidate has proven experience with oversize/overweight loads, securement, DOT compliance, and construction-site driving, and takes pride in delivering equipment and materials safely, on time, and ready for production.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate Class A combination vehicles (tractor + lowboy, flatbed, step-deck, or similar trailers) to transport heavy equipment and materials to and from job sites, yards, and vendors.
- Operate dump trucks (tri-axle, tandem, or articulating) to haul aggregates, fill, spoils, asphalt, milling debris, and other construction materials.
- Load, secure, and unload equipment and materials using proper chains, binders, straps, and blocking; verify securement before every move.
- Obtain and comply with oversize/overweight permits; plan routes considering height, weight, length, and local restrictions.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections per DOT requirements; document defects and report issues to the shop/dispatcher promptly.
- Maintain accurate Hours of Service (HOS) logs, vehicle inspection reports, and load documentation in compliance with FMCSA regulations.
- Coordinate with Dispatcher, Superintendents, and Foremen on pickup/delivery timing, site access, and special handling requirements.
- Position vehicles safely for loading/unloading by excavators, loaders, or cranes; follow spotter signals and site traffic control.
- Monitor vehicle condition (tires, brakes, fluids, lights, coupling) and perform basic operator-level maintenance and cleanliness.
- Support occasional labor or site assistance when not driving (as directed and when safe), while prioritizing driving and compliance duties.
- Follow all company, OSHA, and site-specific safety rules; exercise stop-work authority for unsafe conditions.
- Represent the company professionally on public roads and job sites; communicate courteously with the public, inspectors, and other contractors.
Required Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class A license with clean or acceptable driving record and current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical).
- Minimum 2 years of recent Class A driving experience; construction, heavy-haul, or dump-truck experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to operate lowboy and/or flatbed trailers for equipment moves and dump trucks for material hauling.
- Knowledge of proper load securement (chains, binders, straps), weight distribution, and oversize/overweight permit requirements.
- Familiarity with FMCSA Hours of Service rules, pre-/post-trip inspections, and electronic logging (ELD) systems.
- Ability to work flexible hours including early starts, occasional nights, weekends, and weather-dependent schedules common in construction.
- Physical ability to climb, secure loads, inspect equipment, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong safety mindset, reliability, and clear communication skills (radio and phone).
- Must pass pre-employment DOT drug screen, background check, and Clearinghouse query; ongoing random testing required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience hauling excavators, loaders, dozers, compactors, and similar civil construction equipment on lowboy or RGN trailers.
- Dump truck experience hauling aggregates, spoils, or asphalt on active construction sites.
- Knowledge of Maryland / DC / Virginia (DMV) routes, restrictions, and permit processes.
- Additional endorsements (Tank, Hazmat) or experience with multi-axle configurations.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for operator-level checks and minor adjustments.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus for field communication.
