Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Medical Billing and Accounts Receivable (A/R) Specialist to join our Care Management company. The Medical Billing & A/R Specialist is a critical member of the Revenue Cycle team, responsible for ensuring accurate and timely submission of medical claims for all care management services. This role requires a thorough understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, payer-specific billing guidelines, and compliance standards. The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail, a patient-first mindset, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative care environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Medical Coding & Documentation

Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes to care management encounters, chronic care management (CCM), behavioral health integration (BHI), remote patient monitoring (RPM) services and transitional care management (TCM)
Review provider documentation for coding accuracy, specificity, and compliance prior to claim submission
Query providers when documentation is incomplete, ambiguous, or inconsistent with clinical indicators
Stay current on coding guidelines, annual code updates, and CMS policy changes

Billing & Claims Management

Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to service, ensuring accurate documentation within the EHR system
Collaborate with insurance representatives to investigate and resolve payment discrepancies, including underpayments, denials, and claim reprocessing requests
Prepare, review, and submit clean claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers in a timely manner
Monitor claim status and proactively follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims
Perform accurate and timely payment posting within EHR systems, ensuring proper allocation of payments, adjustments, and denials
Process and analyze Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and Remittance Advice (RAs)
Manage accounts receivable and work denial queues to reduce outstanding balances
Coordinate patient billing inquiries and resolve billing discrepancies with professionalism and accuracy

Compliance & Reporting

Ensure all billing activities comply with HIPAA, OIG guidelines, and applicable federal/state regulations
Participate in internal audits and support external audits as needed
Generate and analyze revenue cycle reports; identify trends in denials and recommend corrective actions
Maintain thorough and organized records of coding and billing activity

Team Support

Provide day-to-day support to team members on billing workflows, payer requirements, and internal processes
Support cross-training efforts by sharing knowledge and maintaining consistency in processes
Support the Billing Manager with ad hoc projects, reporting needs, and process improvement initiatives assigned
Help maintain organized workflows and prioritize tasks to support overall team productivity and performance

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Minimum 3 years of hands-on medical billing and coding experience in a healthcare setting
Minimum 3 years of hands-on accounts receivable experience in a healthcare setting
Demonstrated proficiency with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
Experience with Medicare and Medicaid billing requirements
Familiarity with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Practice Management (PM) systems
Working knowledge of HIPAA regulations and healthcare compliance standards
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred / Strongly Encouraged

One or more of the following active certifications:
CPB – Certified Professional Biller (CPB)
CPC – Certified Professional Coder (AAPC)
CCS – Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA)
CPMA – Certified Professional Medical Auditor (AAPC)
RHIT – Registered Health Information Technician (AHIMA)
Experience billing for chronic care management (CCM), behavioral health integration (BHI), remote patient monitoring (RPM) services or transitional care management (TCM)
Knowledge of value-based care models and managed care contracting
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Business, or related field

EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED required
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Medical Billing, or related discipline preferred
Active billing certification is preferred; candidates actively pursuing certification will be considered

Pay: $25.00 - $29.00 per hour
