Part-time minimum requirements for employment are: Applicants must possess Firefighter Level I certification at the time of hire (Firefighter Level II preferred) and hold a current EMT-Basic certification (Paramedic certification preferred). Candidates must also be able to work a platoon schedule consisting of one 24-hour shift every sixth day.
Summary and Purpose
The Part-Time Firefighter/EMT position is a sworn public safety position that is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting, emergency rescue, and related prevention activities. This position requires skilled, physical work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; emergency medical care, and in the operation and maintenance of Division equipment, apparatus, and quarters.
Position includes training and participation in the operation of firefighting emergency apparatus and the performance of hazardous duties under emergency conditions. Work may be in smoke, fire, heat and cramped surroundings. When not engaged in firefighting or other emergency activities, incumbents participate in drill and study programs and perform routine duties in the care and maintenance of station equipment and facilities. Work is performed under general supervision of the shift Lieutenants, Fire Chiefs or according to established policies and procedures.

Requirements and Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. Additionally, must have State of Ohio EMT Basic Certification and Level I Firefighting Certification. These certifications must be maintained throughout employment.
Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.
Must be willing and able to learn all Divisional rules and regulations, S.O.G.s, Standing Orders and PPM. All candidates must be willing to submit to random drug screenings.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Knowledge of a variety of firefighting duties and methods.
Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
Proficiency in emergency medical care techniques.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to deal effectively with the public.
Effective verbal and written communication skills,
Ability to handle stressful situations.
Ability to learn City’s geography.
Demonstrate agility and physical strength and conditioning for prolonged periods and under adverse conditions (cold and hot temperatures).
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Requires normal hearing abilities.
Possess current Ohio state driver’s license.
Must be of good moral character, with no disqualifying criminal history and must meet or exceed State of Ohio Department of Public Safety requirements for Certificate holders.
Physical Requirements
For those hired after 01/01/2002, must maintain minimum physical fitness standards as established by
the Fire Chief.
Must be able to pass current Divisional testing in all areas of health, fitness, strength and chemical dependency
Must be able to work in hazardous atmospheres and make critical life and death decisions based upon factors present, levels of training and sound judgment not influenced by alcohol or drugs.
Maintain good physical condition in order to work outdoors under various weather conditions, as well as indoors. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, or sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, operate equipment or controls; and reach with hands and arms. He or she may also have to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will occasionally lift heavy weight items, 100 pounds or less and have the ability to occasionally work near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; with explosives, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.
Heights: Must be able to work at distances high above the ground.
Confined Spaces: Must be able to work in confined spaces and in hazardous atmospheres with zero visibility while wearing self contained breathing apparatus.
Water: Must be able to perform work in and around water (lakes, rivers and ponds)
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Respond to fire alarms with company; drive assigned firefighting equipment to and from fires; select safest, shortest routes and maneuver vehicle to scene of emergencies. Perform size-up and initiate activities as needed.
2. Lay and connect hose for most effective use; operate pumps, ladders and other mechanical equipment as required; climb ladders and use fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment.
3. Ventilate burning buildings; remove persons from danger; administer emergency medical care.
4. Perform salvage operations: sweeping water and removing debris.
5. Respond to emergency calls, perform extrication or rescue, determine extent of injury and provide emergency care using modern emergency treatment techniques and equipment.
6. General maintenance and cleaning work of divisional apparatus, equipment, and structures; clean kitchen, sleeping quarters, walls and floors; wash, hang, and dry hose etc.
7. Various Fire prevention activities including, Fire Safety Inspections, Fire Pre-Plans, Fire Division promotional activities (tours, booths, and local school programs) etc.
8. Instruction/ training of others.
